A method of forming a sound lens having a coating of a first metal, that utilizes a lens-shaped piece of heat resistant material, having a convex major surface, and having a sonic impedance similar to that of human tissue, taken from a group consisting essentially of high temperature plastics and silicone. In the method, the convex major surface is sputter coated with a layer of the first metal, less than 10 microns thick.

Image guided intravascular therapy catheter utilizing a thin ablation electrode

A medical device that includes an array of ultrasound elements and an integrated circuit, proximal to the ultrasound elements, having a thickness of less than 40 &#x3bc;m, and having an array of ultrasound element driving-and-receiving contacts, matching the array of ultrasound elements and collectively electrically connected to each of the ultrasound elements. The integrated circuit also having a set of input-output signal contacts, the set being collectively switchable into contact with any one of a set of predefined blocks of driving-and-receiving contacts, and a set of control contacts, wherein inputs received by the control contacts collectively command some aspect of chip operation. The medical device further includes a set a protective covering.

Image guided intravascular therapy catheter utilizing a thin chip multiplexor

A method of ablating plaque from an artery section, using a catheter having a longitudinal body and a distal imaging and ablation tip connected to a distal end of the longitudinal body. The tip has an ultrasound imaging array, and a distal, forward directed face, distal to the ultrasound imaging array, and including a set of electrodes arranged circumferentially about the distal face. The catheter further includes a set of conductors connected to the tip and extending through the body. The catheter is connected to an image display. In the method the tip is introduced into the artery section and images the artery section in front, thereby creating imagery of the artery, which is shown on the image display. This imagery is reviewed and in reliance thereon selectively the electrodes are selectively activated to ablate plaque, while not activating any electrode that would damage any bare arterial wall.

Method of ablating arterial plaque

An intravascular ultrasound catheter having an imaging array and ablation electrodes is provided. The imaging array and ablation electrodes are forward facing and the catheter can be used to ablate plaque in partially or totally occluded blood vessels under real time ultrasound visualization. The ablation electrodes are integrated into the distal face of the catheter and allow ultrasound to pass through them, which provides the ability to achieve highly accurate real time visualization of the tissue undergoing treatment.

An intracardiac catheter for ultrasound guided ablation and EP mapping. Ablation and mapping electrodesare carried on the surface of an outer catheterand an ultrasound array is mounted inside an inner catheter. Backloading the inner catheter into the outer catheter provides the ultrasound array in position to image tissue near the surface electrodes. An acoustic coupling fluid is provided between the catheters and a number of the electrodesare positioned directly within the image field of the array.

In one embodiment, an endoscope has a proximal end portion opposite a distal end portion. A view port is included at the distal end portion to view an internal body region through a passageway of a patient's body. Also located at the distal end portion are one or more piezoelectric elements operable in one mode to determine position of the distal end portion relative to internal body region and operable in a second mode to ablate tissue of the internal body region. The endoscope carries a balloon positioned about the one or more piezoelectric elements to selectively hold the distal end portion in a desired position in the passageway.

Endoscopic medical treatment involving acoustic ablation

An apparatus of the present invention includes: a container operable to hold a liquid; circuitry operable to provide an electrical stimulus; and a piezoelectric element electrically coupled to the circuitry. The piezoelectric element includes a first face positioned beneath the liquid when the liquid is placed in the container, the piezoelectric element being responsive to the electrical stimulus to produce acoustic energy that causes droplets to form from the liquid. The piezoelectric element has a focal length along a focal axis intersecting the first face. The piezoelectric element and the container are structured in relation to one another to form an oblique angle between the focal axis and an axis generally parallel to a surface of the liquid when the liquid is at rest in the container.

A tissue ablation apparatus is disclosed that includes an elongate, flexible device operable to be percutaneously place in vasculature of a patient. The device has an array of 8 or more tissue ablation elements carried on a flexible circuit substrate located at a distal end portion. A cable is also included that has a number of electrical conductors insulated from one another that are each electrically coupled to a different one of the elements. One or more connectors are electrically coupled to the cabling at a proximal end portion of the device.
