A method for controlling an internal combustion engine including at least one exhaust-gas aftertreatment component having an electric heating element, the electric heating element heating the exhaust-gas aftertreatment component and the exhaust gas flowing through the exhaust-gas aftertreatment component, the electric heating element briefly or permanently being acted upon by a heating current, a gas, in particular fresh air and/or exhaust gas, flowing downstream through the exhaust-gas path. In the method, a first temperature upstream from the at least one exhaust-gas aftertreatment component is ascertained, a second temperature downstream from the exhaust-gas aftertreatment component is ascertained, and the exhaust-gas mass flow of the internal combustion engine is ascertained as a function of a first temperature difference between the first and the second temperature and a heating power of the electric heating element, and the internal combustion engine is controlled as a function of the exhaust-gas mass flow.

A method for metering a fuel into at least one exhaust duct of an internal combustion engine and a device for implementing the method. The fuel is converted in an exothermic reaction for achieving a specified setpoint temperature of a component to be heated. The required metering quantity of the fuel is calculated with the inclusion of a model of the exothermic reaction. The method makes it possible to achieve the specified setpoint temperature of the component to be heated or of the exhaust gas in front of the component to be heated using a minimal quantity of fuel.

A procedure to operate an exhaust gas treatment device, which contains a catalytically active surface for the exothermic conversion of a reagent substance, and a device to implement the procedure are proposed. Provision is made to measure a first measurement for the reaction temperature of the reagent substance in the area of the catalytically active surface as well as to calculate a second measurement for the reaction temperature using a model of the catalytically supported reaction. A measurement for the unconverted reagent substance in the area of the catalytically active surface is ascertained from a comparison of the two measurements. The procedural approach according to the invention makes possible on the one hand a protection of the exhaust gas duct components with regard to an excessive temperature and on the other hand an energy efficient heating of the exhaust gas duct components.

Procedure to operate an exhaust gas treatment device and device to implement the procedure

A procedure to operate a particle filter disposed in an exhaust gas area of an internal combustion engine and a device to implement the procedure are proposed. The particle filter is regenerated if required by the particles lodged in the filter, whereby the particle filter is heated for regeneration by manipulation of the exhaust gas temperature upstream in front of the particle filter. During the regeneration of the particle filter, the exhaust gas temperature is established to a specified exhaust gas temperature set point, which is dependent upon at least one parameter of the particle filter during the regeneration. The procedural approach according to the invention allows for a quick regeneration of the particle filter without endangering the particle filter with an inadmissibly high temperature.

Procedure to operate a particle filter disposed in an exhaust gas area of an internal combustion engine and device to implement the procedure

Described is a method for controlling a temperature downstream of a catalyst in the exhaust tract of an internal combustion engine including a first control loop in which a first control variable is calculated from a first deviation that is calculated from a first actual value and a first setpoint value and influences an intra-engine heat generation. In the process, the first actual value is determined as a measure of a temperature downstream of the catalyst. The method features a second control loop in which at least one second control variable is calculated from a second deviation that is calculated from a second actual value and a second setpoint value; a temperature upstream of the catalyst being determined as the second actual value. Also described is a controller which controls the sequence of such a method.
