This invention relates to optical wireless communication systems that use radiation beams for communication. In such systems aiming at the communication partner is not easy especially if the distance between the communication devices is longer and radiation in the non-visible range is used. It is proposed to use an adaptive signal quality indicator in order to provide installing persons and users with a quick and deterministic way of aligning the communication devices.

Adaptive alignment of optical wireless communication devices

High-speed optical communication is very attractive to satisfy high throughput applications. In the meanwhile, it is also desirable to reduce the energy waste resulted from an idle state of the optical transceivers of the communication system. The present invention discloses that both the access point () and the end point device () can operate in at least two different operation states, a normal operation state and a low power state. The low power state is a default state, and the normal operation state is enabled only when a valid trigger is detected. To establish a high-speed optical link (), the end point device () first sends an optical trigger signal () to the access point () in the low power state. The access pint () switches to the normal operation state only when a valid trigger signal is identified after detecting the optical trigger signal ().

Trigger-based optical wireless communication system

In a multi-cell wireless communication system () with at least one optical access point () and at least one radio frequency access point (), more flexibility is provided to an end device () in selecting an access point () for establishing a data link. Because of the line-of-sight characteristic of an optical link and the limited field of view of an optical receiver, optical cells are typically deployed with a relatively high density and adjacent optical cells may have an overlapping area. This invention discloses a method of an end device () for selecting a favorable access point () with reduced overhead, even when the end device is located in the overlapping area of two adjacent optical cells.

Link establishment in a multi-cell wireless network

This invention relates to a power supply system for an optical wireless communication system where a modem () is connected to a plurality of transceivers (). The underlying idea being that the transceivers () are powering the modem (), rather than the modem () powering the transceivers (). To achieve this, a power combiner is provided that can receive power from the transceivers (). The transceivers () power down when no endpoint is detected and use a subset of emitters, in which case the modem () can also be switched to a lower power mode.
