A method for comparing the quality of components with signal reception capabilities. The method generally includes the steps of: (1) providing at least two test vehicles, each equipped with a component to be tested, (2) providing each vehicle with a device for recording the output of the component to be tested, (3) providing at least one of the two vehicles with a video recording device, (4) simultaneously traveling a test route with the two vehicles remaining in close proximity, (5) recording the output signals of the two components to be tested as the vehicles travel the test route, (6) providing a video recording of the vehicles traveling the test route and (7) comparing the recorded signals of the two components while taking into consideration environmental conditions shown in the video recording. The present invention also provides a method for automatically rating the sound quality of a recorded FM broadcast. The method generally includes the steps of (1) computing the average signal level at a frequency above the normal FM modulation frequency, (2) computing the average signal level of the FM pilot signal and (3) subtracting the average signal level computed in step (1) from the average signal level of the FM pilot signal.

Testing method for components with reception capabilities

The specification discloses a dual-band antenna for receiving signals in both the PCS (digital phone) and AMPS (analog phone) frequency ranges. The antenna includes a ground plane, and upper and lower antenna elements spaced both from one another and from the ground plane. The two elements and the ground plane are parallel to one another. A plurality of shorting posts symmetrically arranged about the lower element connect the lower element to the grounding plane. A probe or lead interconnects the centers of the upper and lower antenna elements. The lower element is tuned to a first frequency range, and the upper and lower elements together are tuned to a second frequency range.

Dual-band antenna

A coupling mechanism for (non-radiative) coupling through a dielectric medium, such as the glass of an automobile window, a radiofrequency (RF) antenna signal. The coupling mechanism includes a coaxial conductor for providing the RF antenna signal to a slotline structure (consisting of a layer of metal, deposited on one side of a dielectric substrate such as a circuit board, in which a slot is formed to a depth reaching to the dielectric substrate) mounted typically by an adhesive on one side of the dielectric medium/window glass. On the other side of the dielectric medium/window glass, the coupling mechanism uses either a second slotline structure or a microstrip positioned so as to provide optimal coupling across the dielectric medium/window glass.

Non-radiating single slotline coupler

A method for installing an antenna system having an antenna located exterior to a vehicle. The antenna system has at least one electrically conductive wire to be extended into interior of the vehicle for providing electrical connection to a receiver located in the interior. When the vehicle includes at least one window pane surrounded at least partially by a flexible seal adjacent a weather shield to a portal, the method comprises the steps of positioning the conductive wire in the flexible seal; leading the conductive wire from the flexible seal towards the weather shield; and leading the conductive wire to the receiver through the weather shield.

Method for implementing a vehicular antenna system

A combination satellite and terrestrial antenna system for a single-source application. A first embodiment includes a cross dipole for receiving the circularly polarized satellite signals, and a plurality of monopoles for receiving linearly polarized terrestrial signals. The mono-poles are arranged symmetrically about the cross dipole. Alternative embodiments include a helix antenna for receiving the satellite signals, and one or more linear antennas arranged symmetrically with respect to the helix for the terrestrial signals.

Dual-antenna system for single-frequency band

A vehicle window/antenna system with enhanced heating and AM/FM reception. The system includes a window and a heating/antenna grid supported thereon. The grid is separated into upper and lower portions, and functions as an FM antenna. A flat AM antenna is supported on the window between the upper and lower grid portions. The positioning of the AM antenna within the heating grid enables ice and snow to be cleared from the AM antenna. Antenna leads extend from both the upper and lower grid portions as well as the AM antenna. The two FM leads are connected to a Balun transformer to balance the FM signals.
