In a fuel supply system for a spark-ignition internal combustion engine having a blow-in valve for each cylinder for blowing an easily ignitable mixture of a liquid fuel and a combustion gas via a blow-in nozzle into a combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine, the blow-in valve has a pressure connection for supplying pressurized combustion gas to a blown-in nozzle from an external pressure source, and the blow-in valve has a piston/cylinder unit for delivering the liquid fuel for injection into the cylinder together with the combustion gas, with a plunger being provided for an at least indirect actuation of a nozzle needle of the blow-in nozzle controlling the injection of a metered quantity of fuel and the combustion gas into the combustion chamber.

Fuel supply system for an internal combustion engine

A direct-injection Otto cycle internal-combustion engines can be operated in the stratified charge mode with a later fuel injection during the compression cycle and a lean mixture formation and, with an operating mode with a homogeneous mixture formation, by fuel injection during the intake cycle which is provided for higher load ranges of the internal-combustion engine. The exhaust gases of the internal-combustion engine are decontaminated by an NO,storage catalyst which must be periodically regenerated during a homogeneous mixture formation and at rich fuel/air ratios (&lgr;). To permit a fast change of the operating mode and particularly the regeneration of the storage catalyst without changing the running performance of the internal-combustion engine, the fuel quantity to be injected per power cycle, is apportioned during a homogeneous operating phase during the change of operating modes, corresponding to the actual intake air flow rate by adjusting the respective injection time. Isochronously and proportionally to the change of the injection time, the ignition point in time is adjusted in the direction of a late ignition. The homogeneous operating phase is limited by a change-over point in time at which the injection end of the fuel injection is shifted into the power cycle provided for the demanded operating mode.

Method for changing the operating mode of a direct-injection otto cycle internal-combustion engine

Otto internal-combustion engines having one injector respectively per cylinder for the internal mixture formation can be operated at full load or high partial load by fuel injection in the suction stroke of the piston and, at medium or low partial load, with a compression stroke injection. The compression stroke injection, which is advantageous in this load range, because of low average combustion space temperatures and the tendency to form deposits in the combustion space because of residues of liquid fuel and the resulting impaired operating conditions, can partially be carried out only to a limited degree. In order to provide a process for operating an Otto internal-combustion engine of the above-mentioned type which permits an arbitrary operating period in the medium or low load range, it is provided that, in the operation of the internal-combustion engine with a compression stroke injection, as a function of the time or at least of an operating parameter, independently of the momentary load requirement, a change-over takes place to a suction stroke injection while simultaneously reducing the intake air quantity and, after the conclusion of a certain free-burning interval, a switching-back takes place into the operating mode with the compression stroke injection.

In a gasoline internal combustion engine with direct fuel injection a spark plug with a center electrode is mounted in the cylinder top so as to project into the combustion chamber. A mass electrode is disposed on the piston so as to project upwardly into the combustion chamber and is movable with the piston toward and from the spark plug center electrode. An ignition system is provided for timely generating a spark between the spark plug electrode and the movable mass electrode for igniting a fuel/air mixture in the combustion chamber. A fuel injector is mounted in the cylinder top and adapted to provide a cone-like fuel beam with an envelope disposed between the spark plug electrode and the mass electrode such that a spark generated between the two electrodes extends through the fuel injection beam envelope.
