An ultraviolet light-resistant article that includes: a substrate having a glass or glass-ceramic composition and first and second primary surfaces; an ultraviolet light-absorbing element having a an absorptivity greater than 50% at wavelengths from about 100 nm to about 380 nm and a thickness between about 10 nm and about 100 nm; and a dielectric stack formed with a plasma-enhanced process. Further, the light-absorbing element is between the substrate and the dielectric stack. Alternatively, the light-absorbing element can include one or more ultraviolet light-resistant layers disposed within the dielectric stack over the first primary surface.

Alkali-free glasses are disclosed having (in weight %) 50&#x2266;SiO&#x2266;80%, 2&#x2266;AlO&#x2266;17%, 8&#x2266;BO&#x2266;36%, and greater than or equal to 2% and less than or equal to 25% of at least one of CaO, MgO, BaO, SrO or ZnO. The alkali-free glasses can have a surface layer with greater than 0.2 weight % N. Such alkali-free glasses are achieved by nitriding processes and exhibit increased strength, scratch resistance and chemical durability.

Methods and apparatus for producing display quality glass sheets are provided in which the batch materials for making the sheets are melted in a furnace whose glass-engaging surfaces comprise zirconia (ZrO). By using molybdenum electrodes, instead of the conventional tin electrodes, to electrically heat the molten glass, the wear rate per unit area of the furnace's glass-engaging, zirconia-containing surfaces are reduced by more than 50%, thus reducing zirconia levels (solid+dissolved) in the finished glass by at least a similar amount. As a consequence of this reduction, rejection rates of finished glass sheets are lowered, which is of particular value in the production of glass sheets of large dimensions, as desired by display manufacturers and other users of such sheets.

A method of forming an oxide glass including heating a glass melt having a &#x3b2;concentration of at least about 0.35 in a vessel comprising a metal selected from the group consisting of platinum, molybdenum, palladium, rhodium, and alloys thereof, there being an interface present between the vessel and the glass, and controlling a partial pressure of hydrogen in an atmosphere in contact with an outside surface of the vessel in an amount such that hydrogen permeation blisters form in a region of the glass adjacent the glass-vessel interface.

Method of fining glass

A method for forming and shaping powder mixtures involves compounding, homogenizing, and plasticizing components to form a mixture. The components are powder materials, binder, solvent for the binder, surfactant, and non-solvent with respect to at least the binder, the solvent, and the powder materials. The non-solvent is lower in viscosity than the binder combined with the solvent. The components are chosen to result in improved wet green strength in the subsequently formed green body. The compounding is done by the steps of dry-mixing the powder material, surfactant and binder to form a uniform blend, adding the solvent to the resulting dry blend, and thereafter adding the non-solvent to the blend. The mixture is shaped by passing it through a low to moderate shear extruder, and then through a die to form a green body. The compounding and shaping steps are carried out at a temperature of no greater than ambient temperature. The method is especially suitable for RAM extrusion. Among the advantages, the method results in higher extrusion velocity, throughputs, and wet green strength, without increasing pressures and torques.

Method of forming and shaping plasticized mixtures by low to moderate

The instant invention discloses a method for forming glass/polymer alloy or composite pellets of a uniform shape, and exhibiting an increased density and pellet integrity/strength. The pellets are formed by melt-blending and extruding a semi-molten strand of the glass/polymer alloy or composite and subsequently compressing and cutting the strand into pellets at a predetermined pelletizing temperature. The predetermined pelletizing temperature is that temperature at which the glass/polymer alloy or composite extruded strand is still semi-molten and deformable and at which the so-formed pellets will maintain the shape imparted to them.
