Disclosed herein is an integrated photonics device including a frequency stabilization subsystem for monitoring and/or adjusting the wavelength of light emitted by one or more light sources. The device can include one or more selectors that can combine, select, and/or filter light along one or more light paths, which can include light emitted by a plurality of light sources. Example selectors may include, but are not limited to, an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG), a ring resonator, a plurality of distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs), a plurality of filters, and the like. Output light paths from the selector(s) can be input into one or more detector(s). The detector(s) can receive the light along the light paths and can generate one or more signals as output signal(s) from the frequency stabilization subsystem. A controller can monitor the wavelength and can adjust or generate control signal(s) for the one or more light sources to lock the monitored wavelength to a target wavelength (or within a targeted range of wavelengths).

Systems and methods for wavelength locking in optical sensing systems

Configurations for an optical coupler that includes waveguides that provide asymmetric mode confinement. The optical coupler may include first and second rib waveguides, and the width of the shoulder of at least one rib waveguide may taper to provide the asymmetric mode confinement. In some instances the shoulders of one or both rib waveguides may have different heights in a central region of the optical coupler.

Compact optical coupler

A multi-channel laser source, including: a bus waveguide coupled, at an output end of the bus waveguide, to an output of the multi-channel laser source; a first semiconductor optical amplifier; a first back mirror; a first wavelength-dependent coupler, having a first resonant wavelength, on the bus waveguide; a second semiconductor optical amplifier; a second back mirror; and a second wavelength-dependent coupler, on the bus waveguide, having a second resonant wavelength, different from the first resonant wavelength. In some embodiments the first semiconductor optical amplifier is coupled to the bus waveguide by the first wavelength-dependent coupler, which is nearer to the output end of the bus waveguide than the second wavelength-dependent coupler, the second semiconductor optical amplifier is coupled to the bus waveguide by the second wavelength-dependent coupler, and the first wavelength-dependent coupler is configured to transmit light, at the second resonant wavelength, along the bus waveguide.

Broadband arbitrary wavelength multichannel laser source

A photonic module, comprising a first waveguide; a second waveguide, disposed on an opposing side of the first waveguide to a substrate; and, a coupling section. One of the first waveguide and the second waveguide is formed of crystalline silicon. The other of the first waveguide and the second waveguide is formed of amorphous silicon. The coupling section is configured to couple light between the first waveguide and the second waveguide. Such a silicon photonic module has enhanced coupling and transmission properties in contrast to conventional modules.

Photonic module and method of manufacture

A demultiplexer for use in a wavelength division multiplexed system. The demultiplexer comprises: an input waveguide, configured to receive a wavelength division multiplexed signal; a demultiplexing element, configured to demultiplex the multiplexed signal received from the input waveguide into a plurality of multi-mode demultiplexed signal components; a multi-mode output waveguide, the multi-mode output waveguide being coupled to the demultiplexing element and configured to receive one of the multi-mode demultiplexed signal components; and a splitter, coupled to the multi-mode output waveguide, and configured to split the received multi-mode demultiplexed signal component into two single-mode outputs.

Demultiplexer

This disclosure relates to the layout of optical components included in a photonics integrated circuit (PIC) and the routing of optical traces between the optical components. The optical components can include light sources, a detector array, and a combiner. The optical components can be located in different regions of a substrate of the PIC, where the regions may include one or more types of active optical components, but also may exclude other types of active optical components. The optical traces can include a first plurality of optical traces for routing signals between light sources and a detector array, where the first plurality of optical traces can be located in an outer region of the substrate. The optical traces can also include a second plurality of optical traces for routing signals between the light sources and a combiner, where the second plurality of optical traces can be located in regions between banks of the light sources.

Photonics integrated circuit architecture

An optical out-coupler unit for out-coupling light from a waveguide, comprising a substrate having a planar top surface, a waveguide arranged on the top surface of the substrate and having a facet, a reflective surface, wherein the reflective surface is arranged spaced apart from the facet and opposing the facet, wherein the reflective surface is inclined with respect to a normal to the top surface of the substrate by more than 45°. The optical out-coupler may be part of a photonic integrated chip (PIC).

Optical out-coupler unit for out-coupling light from a waveguide

A photonic chip. In some embodiments, the photonic chip includes a waveguide; and an optically active device comprising a portion of the waveguide. The waveguide may have a first end at a first edge of the photonic chip; and a second end, and the waveguide may have, everywhere between the first end and the second end, a rate of change of curvature having a magnitude not exceeding 2,000/mm.

Optoelectronic device and array thereof

A photonic integrated circuit. In some embodiments, the photonic integrated circuit includes: a waveguide; and a waveguide facet, a first end of the waveguide being at the waveguide facet, a first angle being an angle between: the waveguide at the first end of the waveguide and the normal to the waveguide facet, the first angle being at least 5 degrees, a first section of the waveguide having a first end at the waveguide facet and a second end, the first section having: a curvature of less than 0.01/mm at the first end of the first section, a curvature of less than 0.01/mm at the second end of the first section, and a curvature of at least 0.1/mm at a point between the first end and the second end.

Waveguide facet interface

A tapered waveguide. In some embodiments, the waveguide has a narrow end and a wide end. A taper angle of the waveguide may be, at each point along the waveguide, less than an adiabatic taper angle by a margin. The margin may be greater at a first point than at a second point, where the adiabatic taper angle is less at the first point than at the second point.

Compact waveguide taper and waveguide crossing

A waveguide structure and a method for splitting light is described. The method may include optically coupling a first waveguide and a second waveguide, where the optical coupling may be wavelength insensitive. The widths of the first and second waveguides may be non-adiabatically varying and the optical coupling may be asymmetric between the first and second waveguides. A gap between the first and second waveguides may also be varied non-adiabatically and the gap may depend on the widths of the first and second waveguides. The optical coupling between the first and second waveguides may also occur in the approximate wavelength range of 800 nanometers to 1700 nanometers.

Asymmetric optical power splitting system and method

A waveguide mode filter. In some embodiments, the waveguide mode filter includes a first section of waveguide. The first section may have: a first end; a second end; a rate of change of curvature having a magnitude not exceeding 15/mmwithin the first section; a curvature having a magnitude of at most 0.03/mm at the first end; and a curvature having a magnitude of at least 0.1/mm at the second end.

Higher order mode filter

A multi-path interference filter. The multi-path interference filter includes a first port waveguide, a second port waveguide, and an optical structure connecting the first port waveguide and the second port waveguide. The optical structure has a first optical path from the first port waveguide to the second port waveguide, and a second optical path, different from the first optical path, from the first port waveguide to the second port waveguide. The first optical path has a portion, having a first length, within hydrogenated amorphous silicon. The second optical path has a portion, having a second length, within crystalline silicon, and the second optical path has either no portion within hydrogenated amorphous silicon, or a portion, having a third length, within hydrogenated amorphous silicon, the third length being less than the first length.
