Methods and systems for automated control of the inflation of an inflatable retention member, e.g. a balloon, in a catheter are disclosed. One catheter is preferably a rectal or anal catheter, and the inflation is controlled by a controller. A plurality of predetermined inflation levels are provided, and for each of level, a pumping time threshold and a pressure level threshold are defined. The pressure in the balloon is continuously measured during the inflation. An inflation level is selected form said plurality of inflation levels, and an electric pump is used to inflate the inflatable retention member. Operation of the electric pump is continued until one of the pumping time threshold and pressure level threshold of the selected inflation level has been reached.

Motorized catheter system with improved inflation control

A medical device is disclosed, comprising a substrate and a hydrophilic surface coating arranged on said substrate. The substrate has, on its surface coated with said hydrophilic surface coating, a surface texture with an arithmetical mean deviation of the surface profile (Ra) of at least 3 &#x3bc;m and/or a profile section height difference (Rdc (1-99%)) of at least 18 &#x3bc;m. It has surprisingly been found that the increased surface roughness of the substrate provides significant improvements in e.g. water retention for the hydrophilic coating.

Medical device with hydrophilic coating

A flushable medical device for short term use, such as a urinary catheter, is disclosed, and also a method for producing such a medical device. The medical device comprises at least an elongate shaft made of a degradable material, the degradability being such that the material becomes essentially totally dissolved if maintained in turbulent water at room temperature for at least 6 hours, but retains its structural integrity in water for at least 5 minutes, and preferably at least 10 minutes. Hereby, the medical device can be used for the intended short term use, and then be flushed in an ordinary toilet after use. The degradable material preferably comprises at least one of monosaccharide, disaccharide, oligosaccharide and polysaccharide. In a preferred embodiment, the degradable material primarily comprises water, at least one of sugar and starch and gelatin.

Flushable catheter and method for producing such a catheter

Disclosed are a method and an apparatus for manufacturing a medical tubular object, such as a catheter, for insertion into a body passageway. The method comprises the steps of extruding a tube by pushing tube material though an extrusion nozzle and cutting the extruded tube at a predetermined length. Further, an initial part of the extruded tube is advanced onto a tapered mandrel arranged adjacent the extrusion nozzle such that a flared end is formed, and after a predetermined length of the extruded tube has been advanced onto the tapered mandrel, the tapered mandrel is moved away from the extrusion nozzle to prevent that the rest of the extruded tube is expanded by the tapered mandrel.

Method for manufacturing of a tubular object for insertion into a body passageway

A catheter assembly includes a catheter, part of which forms an insertable length to be inserted through a body opening and a catheter receptacle to accommodate at least part of the catheter such that an insertable portion of the catheter is enclosed but part of the catheter is left outside of the receptacle. Also disclosed is a method for producing a catheter assembly which includes providing a receptacle having an opening, providing a catheter which has a catheter tube and a connector on one end thereof, arranging the catheter tube in the receptacle, and connecting the receptacle to the connector to close the opening.

Catheter assembly

A catheter assembly is provided comprising a catheter including a catheter tube and a connector arranged in one end of the catheter tube. The catheter is preferably a urinary, hydrophilic catheter. Further, the assembly comprises a catheter receptacle, a compartment accommodating the wetting fluid, the compartment being an integrated part of the receptacle but is separated from the cavity, the separation between the wetting fluid compartment and the cavity accommodating the catheter providing a rupturable sealed enclosure with at least one point of weakness.

A use in a medical device of at least one salt of organic acid(s), and preferably a benzoate or a sorbate, as an antimicrobial agent is disclosed, and in particular for the manufacturing of an antimicrobial coating for a medical device, e.g., hydrophyllic urinary catheters, for the prevention of bacterial infection. The pH of the hydrophilic coating may be controlled to be in the range 4.0-8.0, preferably in the range 5.0-6.0, and preferably to be below 7.0. The pH of the hydrophilic coating could be controlled by means of a pH buffer, and preferably a citrate or phosphate buffer. A salt of organic acid in combination with a pH buffer has proven surprisingly efficient for inhibition of bacterial growth, and for prevention of bacterial infections.

Catheter assembly with bactericidal effect

A catheter assembly is provided comprising a catheter () including a catheter tube () and a connector () arranged in one end of the catheter tube. The catheter is preferably a urinary, hydrophilic catheter. Further, the assembly comprises a catheter receptacle () for accommodation of at least the catheter tube, wherein the receptacle is provided with an opening (), said opening being connected to and closed by the connector () of the catheter. A method for producing such a catheter assembly is also provided.

The invention pertains to a foam material for absorption of aqueous liquids, a manufacturing method and an advantageous use of such a foam material, and an absorbent disposable article comprising such a foam material. The foam material is hydrophilic and primarily intended for use in absorbent disposable articles such as baby diapers, incontinence protectors and products for feminine hygiene. However, the foam material according to the invention is also suited for use in other absorbent articles, such as in different wiping materials, bandage materials and other similar products. The chemical structure of a surfactant, which is utilized as a combined emulsifying and hydrophilizing agent when manufacturing the foam material according to the invention, makes it possible to retain a sufficient proportion of the foam surfactant in the foam material even after repeated wettings, something which renders the foam material highly, permanently hydrophilic.
