An automotive autonomous driving system comprising automotive on-board systems comprising a propulsion system, a braking system, a steering system, and a sensory system, an automotive user interface, and an automotive electronic control unit connected to, via an automotive on-board communications network, and configured to cooperate with, the automotive on-board systems and the automotive user interface to provide an automotive autonomous driving system. The automotive electronic control unit is further configured to store and populate a database of recurrent low speed manoeuvres and cause recurrent low speed manoeuvres stored in the database of recurrent low speed manoeuvres to be repeated in autonomous driving mode.

The system comprises: detector devices () operable to provide electrical signals indicative of the relative distance and relative speed of the motor vehicle (V) with respect to a fixed or moving obstacle (O) ahead, and a processing and control unit (ECU) connected to such detector devices () as well as to brake actuators () and arranged to cause activation of the brake actuators () to effect automatic emergency braking of the motor vehicle (V) when the relative distance between the motor vehicle (V) and an obstacle (O) ahead lies between a first predetermined limit value (d) equal to the minimum value at which it is still possible to avoid collision by braking and a preselected intermediate value (d) comprised between said first limit value (d) and a second limit value (d) which is less than the said first limit value (d) and is equal to the minimum relative distance value at which it is still possible to follow a path which avoids the obstacle (O), or when the relative distance (d) becomes less than said second limit value (d).

The method for avoiding collision between a motor vehicle and obstacles placed in the path of the vehicle comprises the stages of forming a radar map of the area in front of the vehicle, reconstructing the geometry of the road, identifying its edges, detecting the position and speed of the vehicle with respect to the road, determining the presumed path of the vehicle on the basis of the road geometry and the manoeuvre being carried out by the vehicle at that instant, detecting objects on the radar map found lying in the presumed path of the motor vehicle and displaying the map found in a perspective representation, ignoring objects which are off the road and indicating objects in the path of the vehicle in a different manner according to their hazard and if appropriate generating alarms of an acoustic type.
