The invention relates to encapsulation structures for OLED displays, wherein the structure provides sufficient barrier properties against oxygen and moisture as well as anti-reflection properties. The structure includes a layer comprising a photo-aligned substance which in a synergistic manner controls both barrier and anti-reflection properties.

A display apparatus includes an electrowetting element including a non-switchable color filter, a first support plate with a surface having a first part overlapped by the non-switchable color filter and a second part not overlapped by the non-switchable color filter, and a first and second fluid. A control apparatus of the display apparatus is operable to switch the first fluid between at least a first configuration with the first fluid in contact with the first part but not substantially in contact with the second part and a second configuration with the first fluid in contact with the second part and with the first fluid being at least one of: not substantially in contact with the first part or at least partly in contact with the first part.

Electrowetting element with non-switchable color filter

An electrowetting display apparatus includes a first substrate including a first electrode that receives a gray-scale voltage and a second electrode insulated from the first electrode and receiving a reference voltage, a second substrate, a fluid layer, and a color filter. The color filter has a first thickness in an area corresponding to the first electrode and a second thickness in an area corresponding to the second electrode, and the first thickness is larger than the second thickness. Accordingly, a cell gap of the electrowetting display apparatus is reduced, and color reproducibility of the electrowetting display apparatus is improved without sacrificing brightness.

Electrowetting element

An electrowetting element includes a surface having a display area; a first fluid and a second fluid immiscible with the first fluid; and a non-switchable color filter for further determining the display effect. A configuration of the first and second fluids is switchable, using an applied voltage, to determine a size of area that the first and second fluids adjoin the display area, which thereby determines a display effect provided by the electrowetting element. An extent of the non-switchable color filter in a plane parallel to a plane of the display area is smaller than the display area.

An electrowetting display device includes a greyscale picture element layer having at least one first picture element having a first fluid configurable to provide a greyscale display state, and a color picture element layer having at least one second picture element having a second fluid configurable to provide a color display state.

Electrowetting display device

An electrowetting display device has a picture element having first and second support plates with a space in between, the space including first and second fluids immiscible with each other, the second fluid being electroconductive or polar. The first support plate includes a wall defining an extent of the picture element. An electric field is applied between an electrode and the second fluid, the electrode having an edge, a low portion and a high portion, the high portion being closer to the second support plate than the low portion, the high portion being arranged adjacent to the wall and having an area smaller than the area of the low portion. The high portion of the electrode has a cut-out causing an increased electric field in the space, and at least part of the edge of the electrode adjacent to the cut-out following the shape of the wall.

An electrowetting display device comprises a picture element having a first support plate and a second support plate having a space therebetween having a first fluid and a second fluid immiscible with the first fluid. The first support plate comprises a display area, adjoining the space, within which the first fluid is confined and having a first surface adjoining the space. A wall protrudes from the first support plate and is formed outside the display area along a part of the perimeter of the display area. The wall has a second surface facing the display area and adjoining the space. An electrode has a first portion adjacent to the first surface and a second portion adjacent to at least a part of the second surface such that a surface of the second portion including a long side of a cross section of the second portion faces the display area.

A display apparatus includes an electrowetting display device with a first support plate, a second support plate and first and second fluids immiscible with each other in a space between the support plates. The first support plate has a display region comprising multiple display areas, each display area being associated with an electrode, the coverage of the first fluid over the display areas being independently controllable.

The first fluid in each element is at the side of the first support plate confined by element walls, and the second fluid is shared by a plurality of picture elements, characterized by a preventer for preventing first fluid portions from being expelled from its confinement when forces other than electrowetting forces are exerted on this fluid.

Display device

An electrowetting display device comprises a plurality of picture elements () having a first support plate () including a surface () and a second support plate. A space () of a picture element between the surface of the first support plate and the second support plate includes at least one first fluid and a second fluid immiscible with each other, the second fluid being electroconductive or polar. The first support plate includes an electrode () for applying an electric field in the picture element. It also includes a layer () arranged on a side of the electrode facing away from said space. The layer forms an electronic component () for applying a voltage to the electrode. The electrode comprises a height difference () corresponding to a thickness of the layer (). The height difference causes an inhomogeneous electric field in the space, providing a preferred direction of motion of the first fluid on application of the electric field.
