An apparatus-transmitting signals in a network includes a light source generating an optical signal for encoding information transmitted over a light path of the network, a modulator controlling the optical signal to generate chirped optical pulses having a first frequency spectrum such that when the pulses are transmitted from the apparatus and received at an end of the first light path the pulses have a chromatic dispersion penalty that is less than a predetermined penalty. Modulation control circuitry receives instructions from a remote controller and, in response to the instructions, controls the modulator such that the chirped optical pulses have a second frequency spectrum such that when the pulses are transmitted from the apparatus and received at an end of a second light path of the telecommunications network the pulses have a chromatic dispersion penalty that is less than a predetermined penalty.

Remotely settable chromatic dispersion robustness for dense wave division multiplexing interfaces

An optical device integrated on a planar substrate is disclosed, comprising a Y-branch attenuator optically coupled to a Mach-Zehnder modulator. The device also comprises means for reducing a crosstalk caused by unguided radiation between the Y-branch attenuator and the Mach-Zehnder modulator. In one embodiment, the reduction of the crosstalk is obtained by connecting the Mach-Zehnder modulator to one arm of the Y-branch attenuator. The invention also comprises a transmitting module including the integrated device.

Attenuator integrated with modulator and transmitting module for WDM systems using the same

A partially configurable optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM) is provided. Fixed single channel and wideband tunable fiber Bragg gratings may be used in combination. OADM channel configuration may be changed by tuning one or more tunable fiber Bragg gratings.

Semi-reconfigurable subband OADM

A digital optical switch includes an input waveguide connected to a Y-shaped branching waveguide having two legs, each of the legs being connected to an output waveguide. Each output waveguide forms one waveguide of a directional coupler, the other waveguide of which has its output dissipated into the substrate. Electrodes are connected to voltage sources such that the switch is operative between two states. In the first state, transmission of optical energy is enhanced between the input waveguide and the first output waveguide and inhibited between the input waveguide and the second output waveguide. Coupling between the first output waveguide and the other waveguide of its respective directional coupler is inhibited and coupling between the second output waveguide and the other waveguide of its respective directional coupler is enhanced. In the second state, transmission of optical energy is inhibited between the input waveguide and the first output waveguide and enhanced between the input waveguide and the second output waveguide. Coupling between the first output waveguide and the other waveguide of its respective directional coupler is enhanced and coupling between the second output waveguide and the other waveguide of its respective directional coupler is inhibited.
