A self-service terminal can include a computing device, a display, a transceiver, a card module, an optical scanner, and a radiation source. The display can be in communication with the computing device and be controlled by the computing device. The computing device can be configured to transmit and receive data through the transceiver. The card module can have an intake and card reader configured to read a chip or a magnetic strip. At least part of a path of movement of the card through the self-service terminal can be defined by the card module. The scanner can be positioned on a first side of the path to capture an image of a first side of the card. The radiation source can emit radiation at an area of the card when the image is being captured.

An automated transaction machine (ATM) can include at least one user interface, at least one computing device, at least one privacy panel, and at least one lighting element. The computing device can be arranged in communication with the user interface. The privacy panel can be disposed on a side of the user interface. The privacy panel can be configured to have a variable opacity. The computing device is engaged with the privacy panel to selectively vary the opacity of the privacy panel. The lighting element is positioned adjacent to an edge of the privacy panel, is configured to selectively emit light, and is controlled by the computing device.

The cash recycler can be configured to receive a first note of currency from a first user of the ATM and dispense the first note of currency to a subsequent, second user of the ATM. The check receiver can be positioned in the housing, an intake portion with an inlet communicating with the exterior of the housing, and a check reader portion configured to receive a check from the intake portion, scan data displayed on the check, and store the check. The intake portion can be positioned below the display and the check reader portion is positioned behind the display.

The invention relates to a device for handling currency notes that includes an input and output unit, a sensor unit to ascertain the denomination of the currency notes deposited, a collective receiving bin to accept currency notes of all denominations and at least two recycling receiving bins to which currency notes can be taken with the aid of a transport unit and from which they can be removed again. A control unit is provided in addition in which data are stored for each recycling receiving bin about which denominations can be accepted in said bin. After the currency note is deposited, the control unit assigns to the currency note a target storage in which said currency note is accepted. To issue a predetermined amount, the control unit ascertains which currency notes should be taken from which recycling receiving bin.
