A method of providing, in a telecommunications network including at least a first and a second set of communication resources, a service to users in a condition of being provided said service both by the first set of communication resources and by the second set of communication resources. The method includes the steps of: upon receipt, through the first set of communication resources, of a service request related to the service from a user, attempting to redirect the service request to the second set of communication resources; and if the attempt succeeds, provisioning the service to the user by the second set of communication resources. The attempt to redirect the service request includes identifying a communication resource among the second set of communication resources, by either considering or not communication resources of the second set as candidates for the service request redirection based on a history criterion that takes into account an observation of the outcome of past redirection attempts.

Method and system for the common management of communication resources in a telecommunications network having distinct communication resources pools

A method of transmitting information content to a plurality of mobile equipment, in which information related to the capability of properly decoding the content from a p-t-m radio bearer is collected by the radio network controller from the UEs that have joined the service. The proper configuration for the transmission of the content is then selected based on the collected information.

A resource management apparatus adapted to implement resource management policies for the management of resources of a system, being susceptible of being assigned to entities requesting services to the system. Apparatus and method for implementing configurable resource management policies

The provision of services to the users of a multi-resource communication network is controlled by modelling the system made up of these resources as a Markov chain, wherein each state of the Markov chain is identified by a respective set of values of the numbers of the users served by each of the resources, and the transitions between states are represented by the allocation and de-allocation to the users of the services provided by the resources. A cost function is defined wherein each of the states gives a respective contribution weighted by the probability that the Markov chain is in that state, such probability being a function of the possible transitions between the states. A plurality of transitions between the states is thus identified that optimizes the cost function, and the resources are allocated to the users according to such plurality of transitions that optimizes the cost function.

Method and system for controlling the allocation of services in a communication network, and corresponding network and computer-program product

A method of managing radio resources of a radio communications network, includes: upon receiving a new service request for a service to be provided, assessing whether there are radio resources of a first set, adapted to and available for satisfying the request, and: in the affirmative case, exploiting the available radio resources for satisfying the new service request; in the negative case: calculating an amount of the adapted radio resources to be set free for satisfying the service request; assessing whether there is at least one first already served service request that, at the time the new service request is received, is being served using the calculated amount of radio resources of the first set, and that can continue to be served by assigning thereto radio resources of a second set, different from the first set, not adapted to serving the new serving request; in the affirmative case: calculating an amount of the radio resources of the second set necessary for serving the at least one already served service request; assessing whether the calculated amount of radio resources of the second set is available; if the calculated amount of radio resources of the second set is available, re-assigning to the at least one first already served service request the radio resources of the second set, and assigning to the new service request the radio resources of the first set previously assigned to the already served service request; in the negative case, refusing the new service request.

Method and apparatus for managing the assignment of radio resources of a radio communications network

A communication network is simulated with a simulator with object based architecture in which each object represents the model of a network device. The simulated network is capable of corresponding to a plurality of different systems, such as, GSM, GPRS, UMTS, WLAN, fixed networks. At the simulator level, the physical devices of the network are subdivided into a first set of devices completely independent of the system that regulates the operation of the network, the operation of the devices of the first set thus being independent of the system, a second set of devices which depend on the system under consideration, the operation of the devices included in the second set thus being specific for the system under consideration, and a third set of devices for the inter-work between the first set and second set, the devices of the third set being able to interact with the devices independent of the system under consideration and with the devices which do depend on the system under consideration.

A method for simulating a telecommunications network through objects that model a respective set of network modules or devices provides for the insertion, for every module or device of the set, of at least one respective interfacing object with the other modules of the set. The above interfacing object has an external side and an internal side with respect to the module or device. Such external side has a character that is independent of idiosyncrasies of such module or device and is therefore uniform for all modules or devices. When there are a plurality of different implementations of the same module or device, it is possible to provide both a unique interfacing object for all different implementations, and a respective interfacing object for every single implementation.

A method for providing, in a communication network including at least a first and a second set of resources, a service to users of at least a first and a second type. The users of the first type are in a condition to be provided said service only by means of said first set of resources, while the users of the second type are in a condition to be provided said service both by means of the first set of resources and by means of the second set of resources. The method includes the steps of detecting during at least one time interval, the total number of requests for service coming from said users, identifying within the total number the fraction of requests adapted to be met only by means of the first set of resources, identifying at least one parameter representative of said fraction, and providing the service to the users of the second type by means of the second set of resources as a function of the at least one parameter.

A simulator system for simulating a wireless local area network in a combination of a wireless local area network and one or more 2G or 3G mobile communication networks includes a first set and a second set of access protocol simulation devices representative of wireless local area network apparatus implementing access protocols. The first set of access protocol simulation devices is representative of radio technology independent apparatus providing integration of the wireless local area network with the mobile communication network(s). The second set of access protocol simulation devices is representative of radio technology dependent apparatus present in the wireless local area network. The simulator is thus configured for simulating different types of wireless local area network technology in the wireless local area network by varying the access protocol simulation devices in the second set while maintaining the access protocol simulating devices in the first set.

A system for controlling, in a multi-resource communication network, the delivery of services by at least one resource capable of simultaneously delivering, within a maximum joint service capacity, at least one first type of service to a first set of users and a second type of service to a second set of users. The increase in the first set of users is capable of causing a decrease in the capacity to serve new users of the second set of users. At least one module for estimating a parameter representing the probability that, in a given time interval, the number of service requests of said second type is such as not to cause the maximum service capacity to be reached. In the presence of a service request of the first type, the estimation module compares the parameter with a respective threshold value and indicates the acceptability of the service request of the first type if that parameter exceeds the respective threshold. If the parameter is lower than the threshold value, then the estimation module evaluates the possible decrease in the capacity to serve new users of the second set of users which can be induced by the acceptance of the request of the first type of service and then compares the possible decrease with a respective decrease threshold value. The service request of the first type is then accepted or blocked.

Method and system for service allocation in communication networks, related network and computer program product therefor

The behavior of a network for mobile ratio apparatuses is simulated in a work station having a data input capable of inserting data representative of a network scenario, a data output capable of making available data representative of results of the simulation of the network, and a simulation environment associated with the computer and capable of simulating the network on the basis of the network scenario and of generating and sending to the data outputs the data representative of the results. This environment has first objects representative of devices and/or physical elements belonging to the network to be simulated and second objects representative of processing modules separate from the first objects and capable of conditioning and activating the first objects on the basis of the network scenario to simulate the network.
