Devices, servers, systems and methods for content protection are provided. Disclosed embodiments improve temporal granularity of controlling access to the protected content and increase resilience against attacks attempting to prevent re-evaluation of conditions of access. Enforcement of re-evaluation may be based on the receipt and/or verification of tokens. In some embodiments, re-evaluation is enforced by periodically rendering content keys required for content decryption unuseable and/or clearing content keys already in use.

A method for securely receiving a multimedia content by a client device operated by one or more operator(s) involving a dedicated provisioning server of a security provider managing symmetric secrets used by the client devices and operators license servers. The provisioning server provides to the client device one or more generations of operator specific unique device secrets, which are then exploited by the various operators' license servers to deliver licenses such that authorized client devices can consume protected multimedia contents.

A method to force a multimedia unit to update an application for viewing broadcast conditional access content by linking said update to an update of the conditional access module firmware. The firmware update is initialized by means of version information transmitted in the content stream. In particular, this version information may be included in ECM or EMM messages or in services information tables in order to be processed by the conditional access module independently from the multimedia unit. The version information comprises of a minimum version and of an available maximum version. If the conditional access module detects that the current version of the firmware is inferior to the available maximum version, it transmits a message requesting an update of the application that initiates downloading a firmware updating from a management center. The update installation is carried out simultaneously in the conditional access module and in the multimedia unit.

Method for updating and managing an audiovisual data processing application included in a multimedia unit by means of a conditional access module

Example embodiments are directed to a digital audio/video (AV) data processing unit and a method of controlling access to the digital AV data. The processing unit of AV digital data includes a deciphering unit of the AV data, a decompression unit, an input/output interface of the processed AV data and communication device towards a security module. The deciphering and decompression units respectively include an encryption unit and a decryption unit, each having at least one personal key and a common encryption key. Deciphering the AV data using the control words and re-encrypting the deciphered AV data occurs only after a successful verification of the control word and the common key. After temporary storage, the re-encrypted AV data cannot be decrypted by the decryption unit unless the common key has been positively verified by the security module by way of a random number generated by the decryption unit.
