A method of making an inlet cone at one of the ends of a connection endpiece for optical fibers, the endpiece being in the form of a cylindrical rod of outside diameter D and including an internal capillary of diameter d.sub.i, the method consisting in providing the end of the connection endpiece with a guide part constituted by a cylindrical body having formed therein: firstly a cylindrical bore of diameter substantially equal to the diameter D of the endpiece, which bore is delimited inside the cylindrical body by a wall constituting an abutment for the end of the endpiece when the endpiece is inserted into the bore; and secondly a guide hole having at least one tapering portion opening to the outside of the cylindrical body with a diameter that is greater than the diameter d.sub.i, and opening into the cylindrical bore at the capillary with a diameter which is substantially equal to the diameter d.sub.i of the capillary. A method for on-site connection of two transmission cables comprising optical fibres, each cable having a protective armouring enclosing a central core provided with regularly spaced grooves on its periphery. Each groove holds a fibre provided with a thin sheath of uniform thickness. After the end of one of the cables has been bared over a given length, the uncovered fibres are moved towards the exterior and secured to a holder surrounding the cable. Thereafter the core is cut perpendicularly to its axis and a grooved portion of an extension core is secured thereto; the fibres are bent back into the grooves in the said portion, and the core portion and the fibres which it bears are cut and subsequently coated with a lubricant. The same operations are performed on the end of the other cable and the two cables are clamped together under a predetermined pressure. Various devices for the embodiment of the method are described.

Method for on-site connection of cables with optical fibres

Device for providing the end portions of the fibers of a flat optical fiber ribbon with connectors. It comprises an elongated connector having two adjacent inner surfaces defining a re-entrant orthogonal connector dihedron and two adjacent outer surfaces defining a projecting orthogonal connector dihedron and a third surface formed with at least a longitudinal groove, and a template having a first and a second adjacent surfaces defining a re-entrant orthogonal template dihedron. At least two members transverse to the template bear a first groove for receiving the sheathed part of the optical fiber and a second groove aligned with the first groove for receiving the stripped part of the fiber. The projecting connector dihedron is applied against the re-entrant template dihedron and the fiber is guided in the grooves on each side of its path along the connector groove, whereby it can be bonded to the connector in predefined position.

Apparatus for on-site connection of cables with optical fibres

An adjustable connector assembly for a laser effect diode, a focussing lens and an optical fibre in an optical fibre transmission system comprising a tubular body generally symetrical about the axis. One end of the tubular body, namely the front end, is provided with an adjustable diode socket assembly means including a first adjustment means at the front end and a socket means for filtering the focussing lens. The other end of the tubular body is provided with a fibre assembly means including transverse second adjustment means so that the ends of the optical fibres may be adjustably positioned in the transverse or xy plane relative to the axial direction, the Z axis of the tubular body. Thus the luminous ray or beam diverted by the diode is adjustable by the first adjustment means at the front end which can vary the position of the diode to the focussing lens in the Z divertion, e.g., axial direction, the transverse or xy adjustment at the fibre optic ends being provided by the second adjustment means at the other end of the connector. The connector is characterized in that said first adjustment means (10) comprises a first socket (21) carrying said diode (D) and secured with tight friction in a second socket (22) insertable in a predetermined position in the body (1) and in which a third socket (23) carrying the lens (4) can slide with easy fit. The connector also comprises radial fingers (232) screwed in the third socket (23) for positioning the lens, said fingers being freely guided in the axia direction through slots (103) provided in the body (1) and displaceable or immobilizable in said axial direction by means of nuts (24) framing said fingers and screwed on the outer periphery of said body.

Method for splicing optical fiber cables which applies to those cables having an axial core and fibers disposed around the core, parallel to the cable axis or having a slight slant with respect thereto. At the places where splicing will have to be made, when the cable is laid down, the jacket of the cable is removed the fibers are glued on the core and two half-shells are disposed round the glued fibers and encase them. The half-shells are bonded to the core and fibers by gluing under pressure. When the glue has set, the half-shells together with the fibers and cable core are sawn perpendicularly to the cable axis which gives two half-shell segments. These segments have registering bores and splicing is achieved by inserting calibrated columns or pins into these bores.
