Resin emulsions are prepared by forming an emulsion of an aqueous solution of an unsaturated material reactive with the resin in the liquid resin, causing the material and the resin to react and adding sufficient water to invert the emulsion to form an emulsion of the reacted resin in water to produce emulsions with improved mechanical stability useful as tackifiers in water-based pressure-sensitive adhesive coating materials in high speed coating lines giving reduced deposits and extended coating times.

Resin emulsions

Dispersions of hydrophobic substance e.s. resin emulsions, usually having a relatively low average particle size can be continuously and speedily prepared by feed a hydrophobic substance in the liquid state into at least two static mixers, arranged in a series. The resin is introduced at a temperature above 50 degrees C. but below its degradation temperature of hydrophobic substance and water under pressure is introduced into the first mixer. The mixture of resin and water is passed to another mixer maintained at a temperature lower than that prevailing in the first mixer and below the boiling point of water. Optionally aqueous solution of surfactant under pressure instead of water is introduced into the first mixer and optionally aqueous surfactant is introduced into the second mixer.

Dispersions and emulsions

Petroleum resins having a softening point from 10.degree. C. to 80.degree. C. obtained from C.sub.5 olefins and diolefines and one or more monovinyl aromatic compounds which contain from 10 to 30 wt. % of the aromatic are useful as tackifiers for carboxylated styrene butadiene copolymer to produce pressure sensitive additives especially aqueous based adhesive when the resin is in the form of an emulsion which is also claimed.

Petroleum resins having a softening point from 10.degree. C. to 80.degree. C. obtained from C.sub.5 olefines and diolefines and one or more monovinyl aromatic compounds contain from 10 to 30 wt. % of the aromatic are useful as tackifiers in a combination with carboxylated styrene butadiene copolymer to produce aqueous based pressure sensitive adhesives.

Tackifiers and their use in pressure sensitive adhesives

Hydrogenated hydrocarbon resins from cyclopentadiene and/or substituted cyclopentadiene of softening point below 90.degree. C. and having a (Tg) as from 35 to 70 lower than the softening point with less than 12 wt. % of the resin having a molecular weight above 1000 are particularly useful as tackifiers in pressure sensitive adhesives especially in hydrogenated styrene/butadiene/styrene block copolymer adhesive formulations where their use can obviate the need for plasticizing oil.

Novel hydrocarbon resins and their use in adhesives

Resins having an improved combination of softening point and tackifying properties together with good color and heat stability are obtained by Freidel-Crafts copolymerization of a C.sub.5 /C.sub.6 unsaturated feed and 5 to 30 wt. % of para methyl styrene.
