A system, method and/or reamer driver device provides a fully closed tube which prevents the invasion of debris and minimizes abrasion of soft tissue during use. The reamer device includes a minimum number of component assemblies, so as to permit easy replacement and minimize wear.

Offset reamer driver

The invention provides a surgical tool driver having a proximal end having a coupling and a distal end comprising a surgical tool connector having a release sleeve for disconnecting the surgical tool. The surgical tool connector further includes a locking member having a locking head adapted for coupling with at least one surgical tool. The locking member is slidingly disposed and at least substantially enclosed within the center of the driver and closely interfaces therewith so as to minimize seams, gaps or openings. The locking member has an axial range of motion which assures that between an unlock and lock position, the locking head is embedded in the driver in the unlock position and then extends axially outwardly, in snug juxtaposition with the driver, to a lock position which is capable of locking a surgical tool to the tool driver in a manner so as to avoid the exposure of a significant seam, gap or opening during activation and so helping prevent debris and/or bone chips from entering the driver.

Reamer driver connection

The present invention provides a surgical reamer (), surgical reamer system, and kit including a surgical reamer. The surgical reamer has a domed shell () extending from the apex to the rim (), a rotation axis (), cutting teeth () disposed around the domed shell wherein a first connecting bar () having a first longitudinal axis and a first diameter is located on the inside surface of the domed shell, with its first longitudinal axis and a first diameter is located on the inside surface of the domed shell, with its first longitudinal axis being adjacent or closely adjacent to the rim and in which a second connecting bar () having a second longitudinal axis and a second diameter is located on the inside surface of the domed shell and spaced apart from the first connecting bar.

Acetabular reamer assembly

An acetabular reaming system is disclosed of the type having a driver and a tool held together by a quick-release coupling mechanism. The tool () has a hollow body () defining a domed shape with a rotational axis (), an apex () aligned with the axis () and a hemispherical wall () extending from the apex () to an equatorial rim () spaced 90 degrees from the axis (). The rim () has an edge () visible to the user that indicates the position of the tool () relative to the bone. A first plurality of cutting sites () is arrayed along the body () and a second plurality of cutting sites () is arrayed circumferentially along the edge (). Preferably, the first plurality of cutting sites () present raised first teeth () having a profile selected from continuous squared (), continuous rounded (), discontinuous squared () and tongued () profiles. Also preferably, the second plurality of cutting sites () present raised second teeth () selected from continuous squared (), continuous rounded (), discontinuous squared (), tongued () and bladed () profiles.

Acetabular reamer

A disposable reamer is provided, made up of a base and a thin-walled, perforated cutting body of flat metal stock affixed thereto. The base and body may be molded together or assembled together in a mechanical manner. The body is optionally formed so as to comprise a plurality of appendages connected at a center so as to improve die forming of the body into a final desired shape while at the same time minimizing stress-induced deformation in the body.

Disposable acetabular reamer from flat stock

Disclosed is a surgical tool holder adapted to connect to a disposable cutting tool, and the surgical instrument combination. The tool holder has a shank with a quick tool coupling at one end and a drive adaptor at a second end. The coupling assembly has a coupling interface for holding the tool, and has a debris reservoir. A locking mechanism is engageable with the shank by a lock interface that holds the coupling assembly in functional assembly, and when unlocked allows component parts of the coupling assembly to be separated for cleaning and sterilization. The surgical tool has a flat base and complementary fittings adapted to be received by the holder's coupling interface. The combination of the flat base with the reservoir defines a relatively enclosed collection space to receive cutting debris from the tool while the holder and tool are coupled together.

An orthopedic prosthetic inserter used for the implantation of an acetabular prosthetic cup implant. The inserter consists of a drive train, a C-shaped housing, and a collet mechanism used to attach a prosthetic cup implant. When activated by the drive train, the collet mechanism expands to draw the prosthesis towards the collet mechanism and create a substantially friction tight engagement therebetween.

A reamer system is provided which includes a cannulated reamer handle, and a corresponding cannulated reamer, which, when assembled and operated over a drill pin secured in a manner axially aligned with the stem of the femoral joint, enables the accurate and controlled reshaping of the femoral joint. The reamer is made up of a cutting form and a central guide, in which the guide is supported at the center of the cutting form by a bar structure. The bar structure includes portions which connect to and extend radially between the central guide and a peripheral edge of the cutting form. Optionally, the central guide includes a surface offset from a plane of the bar structure to a degree which enables that surface to contact an associated surface referenced to the bone, in order to prevent the cutting form from plunging so far over the bone as to potentially damage the femoral stem. This offset surface is preferably polished to reduce friction during relative rotational movement between this surface and the surface referenced to the bone. The offset surface is an axially perpendicular surface of a boss through which the drill pin is guided.

Guided reamer system for reshaping bone

Disclosed is a guided orthopedic bone reamer () for cutting a profile relief shape () into a joint bone (). The reamer () has a cutting head () and an axial guide assembly (). The cutting head () has a profile cutting form () with a rim () and an apex (). The apex () connects to the cutting form () by a set of struts (). An axial guide assembly () has one end () fixed to the apex () and at the other end has a bayonet mechanism () connectable to a drive handle. Rim cutting teeth () are set into the rim () to cut a cylindrical profile (), and bevel cutting teeth () integral to the struts () cut a bevel () onto the cylindrical form () cut into the bone (). A guide pin bore () passes through the apex () and the guide assembly () concentric with the axis of rotation () to receive a guide pin () to guide the reamer () in cutting alignment relative to the joint bone () to be cut.

A reamer system is provided which includes a cannulated reamer holder, and a corresponding cannulated reamer, which, when assembled and operated over a drill pin secured in a manner axially aligned with the stem of the femoral joint, enables the accurate and controlled reshaping of the femoral joint. The reamer is made up of a cutting form and a central guide, in which the guide is supported at the center of the cutting form by a bar structure. The bar structure includes portions which connect to and extend radially between the central guide and a peripheral edge of the cutting form.

The tool interface () has at least one transversely extending portion (), extending radially outward, beyond the diameter of the center rod () at the tool end (). The interface () is adapted to engage with the interface receiver (). The quick connect mechanism () is disposed on the center rod () to move in a rotationally-constrained manner thereon proximate the tool interface (). The mechanism () includes protrusions () biased to bear against and engage the tool support () when the tool support is engaged with the tool interface (). This securely holds the tool support () and prevents its relative rotation with respect to the tool holder ().

A surgical tool holder aids a surgeon in controlling the use of a tool during, for example, preparation of a femoral cavity for reception of hip joint prosthesis. The holder has a housing that encloses a mechanism having, at a far end, a tool-engaging interface, and at the opposite end, a handle which facilitates manipulation of the tool during use in preparing a bone site by the surgeon. The holder enables easy orientation of the tool attached to its end, which is important because control of the tool is critical in order to accurately prepare a recess for reception and installation of a prosthesis.

A surgical instrument holder has a head assembly and a drive spindle assembly. The head has a second coupling end with a coupling device and interface for receiving and holding a surgical instrument. The instrument is held by a releasable locking mechanism having a ring slideably biased against the coupling device by a spring, and a connection device retaining the spring in a fixed position during use. The spindle assembly has a drive spindle rotatably housed in a cylindrical tube. The connection device provides a quick-release connection between the head and drive spindle assemblies, such that unlocking the connection device enables quick disassembly of the connection for cleaning and component sterilization. A method of use of the instrument holder allows the surgical instrument to be installed through an incision in a least invasive orientation separate from the holder.

A surgical instrument holder () is made up of a head assembly () and a drive spindle assembly (). The head assembly () has a shank () with a first driveable end () and second coupling end (). The second end has a coupling device () having an interface () for receiving a surgical instrument (). The instrument () is held in functional assembly to the shank by a releasable locking mechanism (). The releasable locking mechanism () is made up of a locking ring () slideably disposed about the shank, a spring () biased against the coupling device () by the locking ring, and a connection ring () retaining the locking ring in a fixed position during use. The drive spindle assembly (42) is connected to the head assembly () so as to transmit torque therethrough. The spindle assembly () has an elongated drive spindle (), high precision bearings () and a cylindrical tube (). The drive spindle () is releasably mounted to an end (36) of the spindle assembly and is supported for rotation within the cylindrical tube () by the high-precision bearings disposed therebetween and held in place at least in part by the shank (). The bearings () precisely control the position of a surgical instrument () affixed thereto. The connection ring () provides a common quick-release connection with the head assembly () and the drive spindle assembly (), such that unlocking of the connection ring () enables quick disassembly of the connection ring, spring (), locking ring (), and drive spindle assembly () for cleaning and component sterilization.
