Temperature stable and sunlight protected photochromic articles

The invention relates to photochromic transparent organic materials particularly useful for the production of photochromic organic ophthalmic lenses. The material includes an optical-quality polymer matrix and at least one coloring agent giving photochromic properties to the matrix. The coloring agent is chosen from the group of the spirooxazins the spiropyrans, and the chromenes. The polymer of the matrix is chosen from the group of homopolymers of ethyoxylated bisphenol A dimethacrylate with formula I:

This invention is directed to the fabrication of composite lenses consisting of a transparent thermoset polymer exhibiting an index of refraction of at least 1.58 and a thin glass element of essentially constant thickness adhered to the front surface of the polymer without the use of an adhesive, the glass element having a thickness not exceeding 0.3 mm and the thermoset polymer being an aromatic epoxy resin.

This invention is directed to the production of glass-plastic lenses consisting of a thin glass element bonded to a relatively thick transparent lens or lens preform made of poly(diethylene glycol)bis(allyl carbonate) by a transparent thermoset, polyurethane adhesive layer of optical quality having an elongation at rupture of at least 200% and an elastic modulus in the range of 0.13-10 MPa and at 100% elongation.

This invention is concerned with a method for preparing transparent laminated polarizing glass articles consisting of a support of an inorganic or organic glass, a coating exhibiting polarizing properties disposed on one of the surfaces of the support, and an optically transparent layer adhered to the coating which protects the coating from humidity. The vital feature of the method comprises a first treatment by a gamma-aminopropyltrialkoxysilane and a second treatment by an epoxyalkyltrialkoxysilane which is designed to improve the adherence of the optically transparent layer to the polarizing coating. The invention is especially useful in the fabrication of eyeglass lenses.
