The present invention relates to a glazing comprising: a substrate made of colored soda-lime glass composed of main glass-forming constituents and of coloring agents, which exhibits a selectivity (LT/ET) of at least 1.1, measured with Illuminant C for a glass thickness of 4 mm, and a coating deposited by pyrolysis on the colored glass substrate. The coating is a coating which provides the coated glazing with an increased selectivity with respect to the selectivity of the uncoated colored glass. Such a glazing is particularly used for vehicles of the motor vehicle or train type, or alternatively for buildings.

A rear-view assembly for a vehicle includes a mirror and an anti-dazzle adaptor which is movably mounted in front of the mirror and which includes an optical cell having at least one electrically adjustable luminous characteristic selected from the group consisting of transmissivity and reflectivity. The anti-dazzle adaptor for a rear-view device of a vehicle includes an optical cell having at least one electrically adjustable luminous characteristic selected from the group consisting of transmissivity and reflectivity; and means for movably mounting the anti-dazzle adaptor on the rear-view device of the vehicle.

A method of producing dealkalized sheet glass in which sheet glass is dealkalized in stages. The method includes dealkalizing sheet glass in a first stage by exposing the sheet glass to contact with a first dealkalizing medium including at least one acid gas for a period of at least 1 minute while the sheet glass is at a temperature above 400.degree. C.; and further dealkalizing the sheet glass in a subsequent stage by exposing the sheet glass after the first stage to contact with a second dealkalizing medium including at least one acid gas for a period of at least 3 minutes while the sheet glass is at a temperature which is at least 50.degree. C. below one of the temperature of the sheet glass during the first stage and the minimum temperature of the sheet glass during the first stage, and ranges between 400.degree. C. and 250.degree. C.

Method of producing dealkalized sheet glass

Dealkalized sheet glass having a core region which is not dealkalized, having a pre-dealkalization bulk sodium ion concentration of at least 8%, calculated as weight percent sodium oxide in the sheet glass, which pre-dealkalization bulk sodium ion concentration continues to be maintained in the core region of the sheet glass, and having a surface which is dealkalized to a depth such that a sodium ion concentration gradient exists. The sodium ion depletion is maximum at the surface, the depth at which the sodium ion concentration is 90% of the pre-dealkalization bulk sodioum ion concentration is at least twice the depth at which the sodium ion concentration is 50% of the predealkalization bulk sodium ion concentration, and the sodium ion concentration at a depth of 50 nm is not more than 50% of the pre-dealkalization bulk sodium ion concentration. A long-lasting dealkalization is achieved because of a reduced tendancy to ionic migration due to the shape of said sodium ion concentration gradient.

Dealkalized sheet glass

A glass article useful, for example, as a cathode ray tube screen, has a viewing light path which passes through at least one surface region over which the glass is matted by surface pits whereby unwanted specular reflection from that matted region is reduced. The light path also passes through a surface layer formed over a region of the glass so as to reduce the total light reflection from that region of the glass.

Light transmitting glass has at least one surface area which is matted by surface pits. That surface area has a population of merging or contiguous surface pits, the pits being of such small area and profile that clearly legible typed characters of 10-pitch size are still clearly legible when viewed through such matted surface area when that surface is held at a distance of 10 cm from the said characters. At least one matted surface area may be occupied by a population of surface pits which are of such small size that a disk having a diameter of 10 micrometer cannot be placed thereon without overlapping at least two pits. In order to produce such glass, the surface area is etched with a solution of a salt of hydrofluoric acid to leave a substantially contiguous population of fluorine-containing crystals, those crystals are removed to leave the surface area with a population of merging or contiguous surface pits, and the resulting pitted surface area is treated to remove a superficial stratum therefrom in order to leave the surface area occupied by a population of merging or continguous surface pits which are of such small size that a disk having a diameter of 10 micrometer cannot be placed thereon without overlapping at least two pits. The preferred etching medium is aqueous potassium bifluoride, and the superficial stratum removal is preferably effected by chemical polishing, e.g., using a solution containing hydrofluoric acid.

Matted glass

Light transmitting glass having at least one surface area which is matted by surface pits, including an etched surface area having a population of merging or contiguous surface pits of polyhedral form, each pit having a small area so that at least 30% of visible light normally incident on the at least one surface is diffusely transmitted through the surface and the at least one surface having a total luminous transmittance of normally incident visible light of not less than TT-10 where TT is the total luminous transmittance through the same surface prior to etching expressed as a percentage of the total incident visible light.

The invention relates to an article comprising a glass sheet and having an etched pattern, and to a process of manufacturing an article comprising a glass sheet and having an etched pattern. The glass sheet 11 is a chemically tempered glass sheet, and the pattern comprises one or more grooves 10 etched into the article using fluorine ions to a depth of less than 2 .mu.m. The etched grooves 10 constituting the pattern may be formed in a layer 12 of inorganic material such as SiO.sub.2. They may have a width of less than 10 .mu.m and the spacing (p) between two adjacent grooves may also be less than 10 .mu.m. The etching may be performed by applying a layer of radiation-sensitive material to at least one face of that sheet and exposing it to radiation to form a latent image of a desired groove pattern, whereafter the radiation-sensitive material is developed to form a resist and the sheet is exposed, through the resist, to the action of fluorine ions in an etching medium to etch the desired groove pattern to a depth of less than 2 .mu.m. The invention is particularly useful for forming storage discs for recording data and also for forming panels of high optical transmittance.
