Various technologies described herein pertain to disambiguating velocity estimate data of a radar sensor system. First range estimate data can be computed based on samples from a period of a ramp for each ramp in a sequence. First velocity estimate data can be computed based on samples from a range bin across the ramps in the sequence for each range bin. For each of the ramps in the sequence, samples from a period of a ramp can be divided into a plurality of groups of the samples respectively from periods of subramps. The first velocity estimate data can be disambiguated to generate second velocity estimate data. The first velocity estimate data can be disambiguated based on the plurality of groups of the samples respectively from the periods of the subramps.

A fast ramp frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar system () is described herein, where the fast ramp FMCW radar system is configured to employ velocity labeled multiplexing (VLM) in connection with generating detections for objects in a scene. Transmitters () in the radar system are assigned different velocity labels that corresponds to different phase rates of change of consecutive chirps in signals emitted by the transmitters. Approaches for generating detections based upon echo signals that correspond to the emitted signals are also described herein.

Various technologies described herein pertain to a radar sensor system that performs ego motion estimation. A radar sensor system can be utilized to generate an instantaneous three-dimensional ego motion estimate of a vehicle. The radar sensor system employs an algorithm that enables generating ego motion estimates for velocities of the vehicle that can be greater than, less then, or equal to the unambiguous maximum velocity of the radar sensor system. Moreover, a single radar sensor system of a vehicle can implement the approaches set forth herein and the techniques can be applicable regardless of modulation of the radar sensor system.

A phase modulated continuous wave (PMCW) multiple input multiple output (MIMO) radar system is described herein. The radar system is configured to compute range, velocity, and direction of arrival angle of objects relative to the radar system. The radar system includes several transmitting antennas and several receiving antennas, where selected transmitting antennas simultaneously transmit radar signals based on the same modulation signal. Per transmitting antenna, the transmissions are modulated with respective phase offsets on a per pulse repetition interval (PRI) basis. Hence, a coupling between phase shifts over PRI and transmitter positions is established. Effectively, then, each transmitting antenna is labeled with a velocity offset that corresponds to the phase rate of change assigned to the transmitting antenna. This approach is referred to herein as velocity-labeled multiplexing (VLM).

A radar system is described herein. The radar system includes a printed circuit board (PCB) that includes a metallized top layer and a substrate layer that is adjacent the metallized top layer. The substrate layer includes a substrate integrated waveguide (SIW), and the metallized layer has a slotted taper etched therein. The slotted taper is positioned relative to the SIW such that an electromagnetic signal generated by a monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) passes from the slotted taper to the SIW without an intervening microstrip line. The radar system further includes a housing that acts both to disperse heat and to suppress undesired electromagnetic radiation.
