Intramedullary fixation assemblies () and intramedullary fixation devices () can be used in orthopaedic surgery for the fixation of bone fractures. Also disclosed is an insertion device () for inserting an intramedullary fixation device, and a method of fixing a bone fracture. The fixation devices are preferably for addressing fractures of the distal radius, and are preferably styloid nails. The styloid nails preferably have a head portion that can accept up to three bone screws; one of the bone screws is designed to extend across a fracture line between a proximal and a distal bone fragment while the other bone screws are designed to be retained in the distal bone fragment.

Intramedullary fixation assembly

A screwdriver includes a handle having a handle channel extending therethrough and a shaft extending from a proximal end insertable into the handle channel to a distal end including a bit opening sized to receive a proximal portion of a bit therein in combination with a locking sleeve slidably receiving the shaft therethrough and positionable over the shaft distally of the handle and a spring slidably received within the locking sleeve channel over the shaft. A coupling member received over the shaft distally of the locking sleeve is movable from a biased first configuration in which a locking element protrudes radially into the bit opening to lockingly engage a bit received therein and a second configuration in which the coupling member is retracted proximally to compress the spring and permit the locking element to move radially out of the bit opening to permit the bit to be removed therefrom.

A bone fixation plate comprises a plate body extending from a first end configured for placement over a shaft of a bone to a second end configured and dimensioned for placement over an epiphysis of the bone, an outer diameter of the plate body increasing from the first end to the second end to substantially conform to dimensions of the bone. An opening extends through the plate from a first surface which faces away from the bone when mounted thereonto to a second surface which faces the bone when in the desired orientation, the opening being positioned so that, when mounted over the bone, a fracture of the bone is visible therethrough to aid in alignment of the bone plate. First and second holes extend through the plate, each of the first and second holes being structured to lockingly engage a threaded head of a bone fixation device inserted thereinto.

Plating concept for distal radial fractures

A bone fixation assembly is provided, including a bone fixation plate that has a plurality of apertures having different cross-sectional dimensions, and a temporary fixation wire. The temporary fixation wire includes an abutment member that can compress the bone fixation plate against an underlying bone so that the alignment of the bone fixation plate on the bone can be analyzed prior to using bone fixation members to permanently attach the bone fixation plate to the underlying bone.
