A joint assembly for a guiding device comprises a plurality of guiding elements that are concentrically aligned with respect to one another and at least sectionally spherically shaped. The guiding elements are arranged as components of a combined spherical bearing and comprise spherical contact areas. At least two of the guiding elements are integrally manufactured. The at least two guiding elements enable a relative pivot movement therebetween. A guiding device for an instrument incorporates a respective joint assembly. A method of manufacturing a joint assembly involves integrally manufacturing at least to guiding elements that form components of a combined spherical bearing. Uses of a joint assembly involve a use as a spherical bearing in an instrument holder for a simulation system or an assistance system for minimally invasive operations.

A method for testing an optical investigation system, with an imaging device, a video camera and a light source for optical investigation of an object including a reference surface with predetermined optical properties being illuminated with illuminating light from a light source. An image of the reference surface is recorded by the imaging device and the video camera. An operating condition of the video camera that prevails during the recording of the image is recorded. The functionality or another property of the investigation system is determined on the basis of the recorded operating condition.

Method and apparatus for testing an optical investigation system with a light source and an imaging system

An illumination system for producing light and for launching the light into a proximal end of an optical cable of an observation apparatus for endoscopy or microscopy has a light source having at least one LED. In addition, the illumination system has an optical light guiding element between the light source and the proximal end of the optical cable for introducing the light emitted by the light source into the proximal end of the optical cable, wherein a first end region of the optical light guiding element on a side facing the light source has a smaller cross-sectional area than a second end region of the optical light guiding element on a side facing the proximal end of the optical cable. Furthermore, the illumination system has a cooling apparatus which has at least one cooling body and which is thermally conductively connected to the light source in order to remove heat produced by the light source from the illumination system. The cooling body is arranged completely on a side of the light source which is remote from the optical light guiding element.
