There are provided a scalable method for mobility management applied to an IP-based network system including a plurality of routers and a plurality of servers, a part of which serve as a home routing manager (HRM), a part of which serve as local routing managers (LRM) for individual mobile nodes. The method at least comprises the steps of sending a first query about a routing address of a destination mobile node toward the HRM, based on an activation notification (AN) from an ingress access router (AR) of the plurality of routers, triggered by a source mobile mode, from an LRM receiving the activation notification; relaying the first query via one or more intermediate routing managers (IRM) closer to the HRM until the first query reaches the HRM; and in response to the first query, sending the routing address of the destination mobile node back to the ingress access router through the relay path from the HRM.

Routing manager hierarchy

There are provided a method, a network system, and a router capable of decreasing the chance of VRM or VLM changes so as to reduce signaling, and consequently contributing to better scalability. The method is applied to mobility management used in an IP-based network system, which contains a plurality of access routers (AR), location managers (LM) and routing managers (RM), through which a mobile node (MN) transmits and receives information. According to the method, a visited routing manager (VRM) where the MN is currently located monitors the MN, an AR currently communicating with the MN discriminates whether or not the MN is moving out of its connectivity range, and the VRM discriminates whether or not the MN is moving out of its control range. Then, the method switches mobility management over from the current AR to a new AR in accordance with the discrimination results, and switches mobility management over from the current VRM to a new VRM in accordance with the discrimination result.

VRM selection

The system includes a mobile node () communicating with a correspondent node (), a home agent node () managing the mobile node (), a proxy node () being located closer to the mobile node () than the home agent node () and relaying the packets from the mobile node () to the home agent node (), and a routing manager () managing a route of the packets. The proxy node () detects a trigger of a packet route optimization and notifies the routing manager (). The proxy node () establishes the optimized routing path according to a command received from the routing manager () and routes the packets through the established routing path using a secure method.

Method and apparatus for routing a packet in mobile IP system

A method and apparatus for providing selective access to a network, between an end device and a network such as the Internet through one or more access network terminating devices includes determining an access capability for each access network terminating device and comparing the access capability with a preferred access capability associated with a user preference. Best access is determined based on a comparison of the capabilities of the access network terminating devices and the preferred capabilities. Once a match is found, one of the access network terminating devices is selected based on the comparison and the end device is configured according to the access capability of the selected one of the access network terminating devices. Access capabilities include, for example, cost of access, coverage area, and QoS. While communicating with the network the end device continues to detect if new access network terminating devices are available. The access capability for each of the new access network terminating devices is determined and compared with the preferred access capability and/or the current access capabilities being provided to the end device. One of the new access network terminating devices can be selected based on the comparison and the end device configured according the access capability of the new access network terminating device.

Method and apparatus for selective network access

Data packets are transmitted in forward and backward directions via a multiplexed communications medium, wherein each of the data packets is associated with a corresponding one of a plurality of connections. Transmission is performed by, for each connection, assigning a forward delay limit and a corresponding backward delay limit, wherein the sum of the forward and backward delay limits is equal to a round-trip delay bound for the connection. The assigned forward delay limits are used to determine the order in which the data packets supplied by the plurality of connections will be transmitted in the forward direction. Similarly, the assigned backward delay limits are used to determine the order in which the data packets supplied by the plurality of connections will be transmitted in the backward direction. One embodiment accomplishes the forward and backward delay limit assignments by maintaining forward and backward lists of connection identifiers sorted in, for example, ascending order based on time of connection establishment in the forward direction, and in descending order based on time of connection establishment in the backward direction. In another embodiment, transmission order is determined by sorting arriving data packets at the time of their corresponding connection identifiers, wherein the forward and backward sorting rules are selected so that a sum of a forward transmission delay limit and a backward transmission delay limit is less than or equal to a round-trip delay bound for each connection.
