A method and arrangement for distributing services messages from a client terminal to multiple service units or applications in one or more application servers in a multimedia service network. A service message distributor receives from the terminal, a multi-service message that includes a plurality of service message documents containing service-related data targeted to a specific service unit or application. The message distributor converts the received message into a plurality of individual service messages corresponding to the documents. The individual messages are sent separately toward their respective target service units or applications.

Method and system for distributing a multi-service message from a client to multiple related service applications

A method of handling the delivery of push messages from a notification server of a Session Initiation Protocol based network to a network user. The method comprises signalling to said notification server the start of a Session Initiation Protocol session and the end of a Session Initiation Protocol session, and deferring the delivery of some or all push messages, scheduled for delivery to said user during the ongoing session, until the session has finished.

Message handling in an IP multimedia subsystem

A method and apparatus for handling incoming service requests, where an application server comprises a set of traffic modules, each being capable of handling at least one predetermined multimedia service. When an initial service request is received from a requester, a load balancing function, capable of selecting basically any traffic module in the set of traffic modules, is applied to assign a traffic module in the set of traffic modules for handling the received service request. After processing the request, a response is sent to the requester including a port number associated with the assigned traffic module. When receiving a subsequent service request including a port number indication, a port mapping function is applied to determine the earlier-assigned traffic module associated with the given port number indication, for handling said subsequent service request.

Method and apparatus for distributing load on application servers

A method and apparatus for distributing load between a plurality of servers, for handling incoming service requests in a server system. When a service request in received in an access node, a primary server is assigned out of a set of primary servers, using a first scheduling algorithm, for performing a processing task for the received service request. The first scheduling algorithm is capable of selecting any primary server. Further, a secondary server is assigned out of a set of secondary servers, using a second scheduling algorithm, for performing a storing task for the received service request. The second scheduling algorithm is capable of selecting one specific secondary servers for a storing task.

Method and apparatus for load sharing and data distribution in servers

A method and apparatus for dynamically reconfiguring a server system. When a new server configuration is applied, a previous server configuration is saved. When receiving a service request, a first server is selected by using a first scheduling algorithm according to the new configuration. If the selected server is incorrect, a second server is selected by using a second scheduling algorithm according to the saved previous server configuration. User data associated with the received service request is moved from the second server, if correct, to the first server. In this way, stored data will be gradually and dynamically reorganized from the previous configuration to the new configuration in a relatively simple way.

Method and apparatus for dynamically reconfiguring a server system

Alternate speech and data communication over a single circuit is implemented within a communication network which include first nodes which include both a data source and a speech source. Digital information, comprising either speech parameters or data, is sent in discrete blocks between the first node and a second node connected to the network. An inband signaling bit pattern is included within selected blocks sent by a TX-alternator in the sending node to indicate whether all following digital information is to be interpreted by the receiving node as speech or data and a RX-alternator in the receiving node interprets the digital information in accordance with the last received inband signaling pattern. One exemplary implementation is in a GSM cellular radio network in tandem free operation.

Alternating speech and data transmission in digital communications systems

The present invention relates to a service node between Internet networks and a telecommunications network, said node being used to order telephony services by means of HTML pages from a computer having a WWW browser. The invention also relates to a method for calling a B subscriber, in which the call is ordered from the computer but the connection is set up between the telephones of the A and B subscribers' telephones. The service node communicates with computers connected to computer networks using the HTTP protocol. The node stores data related to a subscriber; said data can be used when the user requests a telephony service. The node is centrally located, which enables the use of its services even if the user moves to another location and terminal.

Apparatus and method for communication between data network and telecommunication network

An enhanced radio telephone providing both wireless communication and Internet-protocol (IP) telephone communication. In addition to transmitting and receiving digitized and coded speech signals in a wireless fashion using a radio transceiver, the enhanced radio telephone can also exchange coded speech data with a computer which is coupled to a communication network. Thus, the enhanced radio telephone can selectively operate as either a conventional radio telephone or as an improved IP telephone. The enhanced radio telephone includes an internal speech coder which is implemented for low power consumption and which allows the enhanced radio telephone to be used with a relatively low-cost computer for effective and economic IP telephony. In exemplary embodiments, an enhanced radio handset is connected to an input/output port of a personal computer running a software telephony application. Coded and compressed digital speech signals are passed back and forth between the enhanced radio telephone and the computer, and the computer performs conversions between the coded speech signals and an appropriate network protocol. Because the computer does not perform speech coding and decoding internally, the computer functionality may be implemented, for example, using an inexpensive notebook or palm-top computer. Advantageously, a user may initiate telephone calls from either the enhanced radio telephone or the telephony application running on the computer.

Enhanced radio telephone for use in internet telephony

A method and system are disclosed in which an incoming call is routed to a service node with a World-Wide Web interface. In a preferred embodiment, responsive to an incoming call, an 'alert' software routine is executed in the service node, which sends an alert message to a Java software application residing in the called party's terminal (e.g., personal computer, etc.). The Java application causes a window to be displayed on the called party's terminal, which shows pertinent information about the calling party. The displayed window also contains 'buttons' that allow the called party to choose (at a minimum) whether to accept the call, reject the call, hold the call, or re-direct the call to another phone.

Controlling incoming calls via the world-wide web

A cellular telecommunications system has a plurality of nodes, each for performing at least one of a number of cellular telecommunications system functions, including base station, speech coder, control processing, signal processing, local handoff, location register, and network interface functions. The nodes are interconnected by a network preferably comprising an optical fiber cable. In one aspect of the invention, the protocol that is used on the network is a high speed synchronous protocol, such as the DTM protocol. A first node in the system may be an antenna; an RF component coupled to the antenna; an analog-to-digital converter having an analog port and a digital port, the analog port being coupled to the RF component; and an optical fiber modem for connecting the digital port of the analog-to-digital converter to the network means. A second node in the system may be for performing base station controller functions, wherein the first and second nodes, together, operate as a distributed base station. In another aspect of the invention, some of the nodes may be transceivers, while other nodes include antennas coupled to frequency band filters. The network operates to permit any of the transceivers to be coupled to any one or more of the antennas, thereby permitting a handoff of a call from one antenna to another while maintaining use of the same transceiver, or permitting a handoff of a call from one transceiver to another while maintaining use of the same antenna.

Distributed telecommunications system

Methods and apparatus for detecting and predicting movement patterns of mobile radio transceivers, such as mobile cellular telephones, enhance the performance of hierarchical radio networks, in which network structures, such as different cells, have different communication bandwidths. One method of predicting a next location of a mobile terminal based on stored previous locations of the mobile terminal includes the step of comparing a current sequence that includes the current location of the mobile terminal and a plurality of previous locations of the mobile terminal to each of a plurality of stored sequences that each include previous locations of the mobile terminal. The method also includes the steps of selecting one of the stored sequences based on at least one quantitative measure of a degree of matching between the current sequence and each stored sequence, and predicting the next location of the mobile terminal based on the selected one of the stored sequences. Methods and apparatus for determining regular patterns in movements of a mobile terminal are also described, as is a communication network having a plurality of servers, the servers being positioned in respective geographical areas and organized in a distributed file system; a mobile terminal having a device for communicating with the server nearest the mobile terminal, the communicating device accessing application files and data files stored in the servers; and a mobile distributed system platform having a device for controlling the distributed file system of the servers and a device for predicting a next location of a mobile terminal, the controlling device distributing location sensitive information among the servers based on a next location predicted by the predicting device.
