A rock drill button having a body of sintered cemented carbide that has hard constituents of tungsten carbide (WC) in a binder phase of Co, wherein the cemented carbide has 4-12 mass % Co and balance WC and unavoidable impurities. The cemented carbide also has Cr in such an amount that the Cr/Co ratio is within the range of 0.043-0.19, and that the WC grain size mean value is above 1.75 &#x3bc;m.

Coated milling insert has a WC&#x2014;Co cemented carbide with a low content of cubic carbides and a highly W-alloyed binder phase and a coating including an inner layer of TiCNwith columnar grains followed by a layer of &#x3ba;-AlOand a top layer of TiN. The coated milling insert is particularly useful for milling of grey cast iron with or without cast skin under wet conditions at low and moderate cutting speeds and milling of nodular cast iron and compacted graphite iron with or without cast skin under wet conditions at moderate cutting speeds.

Coated inserts for rough milling

Coated milling insert has a WC-Co cemented carbide with a low content of cubic carbides and a highly W-alloyed binder phase and a coating including an inner layer of TiCNwith columnar grains followed by a layer of &#x3ba;-AlOand a top layer of TiN. The coated milling insert is particularly useful for milling of grey cast iron with or without cast skin under wet conditions at low and moderate cutting speeds and milling of nodular cast iron and compacted graphite iron with or without cast skin under wet conditions at moderate cutting speeds.

The present invention relates to a cutting tool insert particularly for turning of steel comprising a cemented carbide body, a coating with a post treatment with a first, innermost layer system of one or several layers of TiCNOwith x+y+z&#x2266;1 with a total thickness of 0.7&#x2013;4.5 &#x3bc;m a second multilayer system consisting of a totally 5&#x2013;31 alternating AlOand TiCNO(x+y+z&#x2266;1), preferably &#x3ba;-AlOand TiN, the AlO-layers having an individual layer thickness of &#x3c;0.5 &#x3bc;m and the TiCNO-layers 0.01&#x2013;0.2 &#x3bc;m with a total thickness of the multilayer of 1.0&#x2013;4.0 &#x3bc;m. The multilayer is exposed along the edge line and into the rake and flank face, at least 0.02 mm, from the edge line on the rake face, preferably the contact length of the chip at most 0.9 mm, and 0.02&#x2013;0.20 mm on the flank face.

The present invention discloses an HSS tool with a PVD coating and with at least one cutting edge. The cutting edge has a radius of 15-25 &mgr;m and the carbides in the HSS are in contact with the coating. The present invention also relates to a method of making an HSS tool provided with a PVD coating with improved wear resistance. The improvement is obtained by subjecting the tool prior to the deposition of the coating to an electropolishing treatment such that a cutting edge radius of 15-25 &mgr;m is obtained and that the carbides in the HSS are revealed.
