A sensor cell () for control purposes usable in an assembly () of fuel cells of the type having a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) interposed between an anode gas diffusion layer and a cathode gas diffusion layer, and first and second current collectors coupled to the anode and cathode gas diffusion layers (GDL), respectively. The sensor cell () is preferably coupled so that it shares the negative current collector () with last fuel cell in the in-plane fuel cell assembly (), and is short-circuited by a resistor () to provide a voltage signal, indicative of the status of the assembly in operation.

The present invention relates to a fuel cell device for use in planar configuration air breathing polymer electrolyte electrochemical devices and to a support plate, gas connection means and clamping means for use in the fuel cell device. The electrochemical device may be use as a fuel cell or an electrolyzer. In particular it relates to a planar configuration air breathing polymer electrolyte electrochemical device including at least two fuel cells arranged in series connection on one surface of a support plate, characterized in that the fuel cells () are arranged to press against a bearing plate (), which has an area that is larger than the area of the support plate.

A polyelectrolyte membrane fuel cell apparatus, includes a backing plate, a top clamping plate, at least one in-plane planar fuel cell assembly interposed between the top plate and the backing plate, and a current collector foil interposed between the planar fuel cell(s) and the top clamping plate, the current collector foil including an electrically non-conductive foil having a pattern of electrically conductive material provided thereon on the side facing the planar fuel cell. The fuel cell apparatus is held together by spot welds between the top clamping plate and the backing plate.

Fuel cell assembly

An electrochemically operable actuator (), includes a support structure, a flexible membrane sealed against the support structure to form a compartment (), electrochemical element () adapted to generate hydrogen or oxygen gas and to deliver the gas to the inside of the compartment, the electrochemical element including an ion conducting membrane having an electrode on opposing sides thereof, and terminal element for connecting a voltage source to enable applying a potential across the electrodes. The electrochemical element can be a hydrogen pump () or an electrolyzer or both. A fuel cell assembly () incorporating a valve (V) with an actuator is also described.

An arrangement for interconnecting electrochemical cells of the type having a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) interposed between an anode gas diffusion layer () and a cathode gas diffusion layer (), and first and second current collectors coupled to said anode and cathode gas diffusion layers (GDL), respectively, wherein the first current collector extends from the anode side of one cell to the cathode side of an adjacent cell, and wherein the cell components are clamped together. The first current collector () which is in contact with the anode gas diffusion layer (GDL;) of a first electrochemical cell () is configured to be connected to the cathode side of a second, adjacent electrochemical cell () via an inert and electrically conductive member (), without being in electrochemical contact with the electrochemically active components of the adjacent cell.

Arrangement for interconnecting electrochemical cells, a fuel cell assembly and method of manufacturing a fuel cell device

Fuel cell device comprising a fuel cell assembly with at least one polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell and a fuel delivery means for providing a fuel flow. The device is provided with means for pre burning adapted to burn fuel entering the fuel cell assembly during the start up phase until the fuel flow is increased to a predetermined level and/or the oxygen concentration is decreased to a predetermined level. A method of operating the assembly comprises the steps of initiating the start up phase by causing the fuel delivery means to deliver a fuel flow, whereby a means for pre burning burns off fuel entering the fuel cell assembly, monitoring the fuel flow and/or the oxygen concentration and when the fuel flow is increased to a predetermined level and/or the oxygen concentration is decreased to a predetermined.

Fuel cell device and method of operating the same

A polymer electrolyte electrochemical device includes an anode current collector (), a membrane electrode assembly () with anode and cathode gas backings (), and a cathode current collector (), wherein the membrane electrode assembly is sealed and attached at least to the anode current collector by adhesive elements, thereby creating an anode gas chamber, and optionally attached to the cathode current collector by adhesive elements, the adhesive elements being electrically conducting or electrically non-conducting. The invention also relates to polymer electrolyte electrochemical device components adapted for use in a single cell electrochemical device and a series arrangement electrochemical device.
