An engine driven vehicle includes at least one engine, and control devices that are arranged to control a transmission that is driven by the engine. The control devices are arranged to receive at least two sets of data, each set including at least one of a first signal that includes information about the gradient of the surface on which the vehicle is being driven sent from a first sensor, and at least one second signal that includes information about the vehicle's speed sent from a second sensor, and at least one third signal that includes information about the vehicle's acceleration. The control devices are also arranged to calculate at least one of two different resistance to travel constants kand k, in response to the first, second and third signals, and to control the transmission in response to at least one of the constants kand k.

A method for adapting gear selection in a vehicle, the vehicle including an engine with an engine output shaft connected to an automated mechanical transmission via a clutch, a transmission output shaft connected to at least one driven wheel of the vehicle, an arrangement for registering whether a towed vehicle is connected to said vehicle, and at least one control unit for receiving input signals including signals indicative of the towed vehicle connection, and for processing the signals in accordance with programmed logic rules to issue gear selection command output signals to the transmission for gear shifting, where the control unit, when sensing that a towed vehicle has been connected to the vehicle, changes an originally selected first gear to a lower second gear having a higher starting gear ratio compared to the first gear. The towed vehicle connection registering arrangement registers at least bounce from when the vehicle bounces into the towed vehicle for connecting the towed vehicle to the vehicle. A more sure registration of whether a towed vehicle is connected to the vehicle or not is obtained.

Method and arrangement for providing an electronic gear shift selector associated with an automatic mechanical transmission for a heavy vehicle. The gear shift selector includes a toggle switch for asserting at least one gear shift request, a counter receiving the at least one gear shift request, and a time delay for preventing communication of the at least one gear shift request from the counter until a predefined time period has passed. A method for gear selection during driving of a vehicle in a heavy uphill drive condition is provided, the vehicle including an engine, an automated mechanical transmission, a clutch, a control unit for receiving input signals including signals indicative of vehicle speed, engaged ratio of the transmission, rotational speed of the engine, rotational speed of a input shaft and displacement of a throttle control for engine torque request, and for processing the signals in accordance with programmed logic rules to issue command output signals to the engine, to the transmission and to said clutch. When sensing a heavy uphill drive condition a target gear is determined for the uphill drive condition, the target gear being the highest possible gear with lowest possible gear ratio where the vehicle, in view of at least current circumstances, will be at least theoretically able to hold a constant vehicle speed or accelerate at least slightly, and where further selection of downshifts will be adapted so that no lower gear than the target gear will be selected and engaged.

Method for gear selection during driving of a vehicle in a heavy uphill drive condition

A motor-driven vehicle includes at least an engine, control devices arranged to control a transmission driven by the engine, a first sensor that is arranged to communicate with the control devices, and a second sensor that is arranged to communicate with the control devices, with the control devices being arranged to receive a first signal sent from the first sensor that includes information about the gradient of the surface on which the vehicle is being driven, and with the control devices being arranged to receive a second signal sent from the second sensor that includes information about torque. The control devices are arranged to correct the first signal in response to the second signal, and to control the transmission in response to the corrected first signal, and thereby compensate for the effect of the torque on the first sensor.
