There is provided a tool at least partly coated with at least two refractory layers of which one of the said layers is a fine-grained &#x3b1;-AlO-layer which is the top layer along the cutting edge-line and the other a TiCNO- or a ZrCN-layer being the top layer on the clearance face. The coated tool exhibits excellent flank and crater wear and high resistance to flaking, particularly when used for machining of low carbon steel and stainless steel. Used cutting edges can easily be identified by the naked eye.

A twist drill for metal cutting, made of cemented carbide, including helical chip flutes extending through an entire body of the twist drill or a part thereof, a shank to be secured to a rotary spindle, two main cutting edges, and two leading edges. A method of making a cutting insert includes forming a powder mixture containing WC, 2-10 wt % Co, 4-12 wt % cubic carbides, adding N in an amount of 0.9-1.7% of the weight of the cubic carbides, mixing the powder with a pressing agent, milling and spray drying the mixture, compacting and sintering the material at 1300-1500 in an atmosphere of sintering gas 40-60 mbar, applying post-sintering treatment, and applying a coating by CVD or MTCVD.

Methods of making a coated cemented carbide body include: forming a powder mixture having WC, 5-12 wt % Co, 3-11% cubic carbides of Ta and Ti with a ratio of Ta/Ti is 1.0-4.0; adding N in an amount of 0.6-2.0% of the weight of Ta and Ti; milling and spray-drying the mixture to form a powder; compacting and sintering the powder at a temperature of 1300-1500&#xb0; C., in a controlled atmosphere of about 50 mbar followed by cooling, whereby a body having a binder phase enriched and essentially gamma-phase free surface zone of 5-50 &#x3bc;m in thickness is obtained; applying a pre-coating treatment to the body; and appling a hard, wear-resistant coating to the body.

Cemented carbide insert

There is disclosed a coated cutting insert particularly useful for cutting in cast iron materials. The insert is characterized by a straight WC-Co cemented carbide body having a highly W-alloyed Co binder phase, a well-defined surface content of Co and a coating including an innermost layer of TiCNOwith columnar grains, a layer of a fine-grained, textured AlOlayer and a top layer of TiCNOthat has been removed along the cutting edge line.

Coated cutting insert

The present invention relates to a cutting tool insert and its methods of manufacture for machining of steel comprising a cemented carbide body and a coatings. The cemented carbide body includes WC, 5-12 wt-% Co and 3-11 wt-% of cubic carbides of metals Ta and Ti. The amount of Nb is below 0.1 wt-% and the ratio Ta/Ti is 1.0-4.0. The Co-binder phase is highly alloyed with W with a CW-ratio of 0.75-0.95 and, finally, the cemented carbide body has a binder phase enriched and essentially gamma phase free surface zone of a thickness of 5-50 &#x3bc;m.

The present invention relates to a coated cemented carbide insert for turning of steel, like low alloyed steels, carbon steels and tough hardened steels at high cutting speeds. The cemented carbide consists of WC, 2-10 wt. % Co and 4-12 wt. % of cubic carbides of metals from groups 4, 5 or 6 of the periodic table, preferably Ti, Ta and Nb. The Co-binder phase is highly alloyed with W with a CW-ratio of 0.75-0.90. The insert has a binder phase enriched and essentially cubic carbide free surface zone A of a thickness of &#x3c;20 &#x3bc;m and along a line C essentially bisecting the edge, in the direction from the edge to the centre of the insert, a binder phase content increases essentially monotonously until it reaches the bulk composition. The binder phase content at the edge is 0.65-0.75 times the binder phase content by volume of the bulk and the depth of the binder phase depletion is 100-300 &#x3bc;m, preferably 150-250 &#x3bc;m. The insert is coated with 3-12 &#x3bc;m columnar TiCN-layer followed by a 2-12 &#x3bc;m thick AlO-layer.

The present invention relates to a coated cemented carbide cutting tool particularly for turning applications with high toughness demands, of stainless steels of different compositions and microstructures, and of low and medium alloyed non-stainless steels. The cemented carbide is WC-Co based with a composition of 9-12 wt % Co, 0.2-2.0 wt % cubic carbides from elements from group IVa, Va or VIa of the periodic table and balance WC with a grain size of 1.5-2 &#x3bc;m. The binder phase is W-alloyed with a CW-ratio in the range of 0.77-0.95. The coating includes a multilayered structure of the composition (TiAl,)N in which x varies repeatedly between the two ranges 0.45&#x3c;x&#x3c;0.55 and 0.70&#x3c;x&#x3c;0.80, adding up to a total thickness of 2-9 &#x3bc;m.

Cemented carbide insert and method of making same
