An electromagnetic brake system for a metal-making process. The electromagnetic brake system includes a two-level magnetic structure, in particular an upper magnetic core structure configured to be mounted to an upper portion of a mold and a lower magnetic core structure configured to be mounted to a lower portion of a mold. Lateral coils on the upper magnetic structure are configured to be controlled to generate a first magnetic field in a first field direction and inner coils are configured to be controlled to generate a second magnetic field in a second field direction, simultaneously with the first magnetic field. The lower magnetic core structure has lower coils which are configured to be controlled to generate a third magnetic field in the first direction simultaneously as the lateral coils and the inner coils generate their fields.

Method for controlling a flow of molten steel in a mould by applying at least one magnetic field to the molten steel in a continuous slab casting machine. Controlling a molten steel flow velocity on a molten steel bath surface to a predetermined molten steel flow velocity by applying a static magnetic field to impart a stabilizing and braking force to a discharge flow from an immersion nozzle when the molten steel flow velocity on the meniscus is higher than a mould powder entrainment critical flow velocity. Controlling the molten steel flow velocity on the meniscus to a range of from an inclusion adherence critical flow velocity or more to a mould powder entrainment critical flow velocity or less by applying a shifting magnetic field to increase the molten steel flow when the molten steel flow velocity on the meniscus is lower than the inclusion-adherence critical flow velocity.

Method and apparatus for controlling the flow of molten steel in a mould

A device for braking a flow of molten metal () in a device for continuous or semi-continuous casting of metals in a mould () which is provided with opposite broad sides () and opposite short sides (), said device comprising at least one magnet core (), said at least one core facing one of the short sides () of the mould () for the purpose of generating a magnetic field (B) and an induced current (i) in a region of the molten metal () adjacent the short side (). The core () is arranged in such a way that the magnet field (B) which is generated in said region generally has a direction perpendicular from the short side () of the mould () towards the centre of the latter.

Electromagnetic brake

A method of controlling the flow of molten metal in non-solidified portions of a strand () during continuous casting, and a device for application of the method. The device comprises a two-phase or plural-phase stirrer () arranged around a mould () that is open in opposite ends and that surrounds the strand (), said stirrer () being arranged to generate a moving magnetic field in the melt, and at least one magnetic flow-conducting body () being placed between an inner periphery of said stirrer () and the outer periphery of the mould (). In the case of open casting, the magnetic flow-conducting body () is positioned in a first position in which it displaces at least a part of the magnetic flow generated by the stirrer () in a direction towards the meniscus () of the strand (), and, in the case of closed casting, the magnetic flow-conducting body () is positioned in a second position in which it displaces at least a part of the magnetic flow generated by the stirrer () away from the meniscus () of the strand ().

Method and device for controlling stirring in a strand

A device for continuous or semi-continuous casting of metal has a cooled continuous casting mold assembly and an inductive coil arranged at the top end of the mold assembly. The mold assembly is divided into at least two mold assembly parts separated and electrically insulated from each other by partitions, which are oriented in the casting direction and where each partition is formed with an electrically insulating barrier. Each mold assembly part has a mold part associated with a corresponding mechanically supporting mold back-up structure part, and an electrical conductor, with an electrical conductivity higher than the electrical conductivity of the back-up structure. The conductor is arranged with the mold back-up structure part on the side of the mold back-up structure part facing away from the mold, the outside face.

Device for casting of metal

A method and a device for continuous or semi-continuous casting of metal, where hot melt is supplied to a cooled continuous casting mold and the melt is cooled and formed to a at least partly solidified strand as it passes through the mold. An inductive coil is arranged at the top end of the mold to, when supplied with an alternating electric high frequency current, generate a high frequency magnetic field to act upon the melt in the mold, whereby heat is developed in the melt and compressive forces acting to separate the melt from the mold wall are generated. The coil is supplied with the high frequency current from a power supply unit with a current control to supply an alternating electric high frequency current having a base frequency of 50 Hz or more to the inductive coil. The current control has modulation means for modulating and controlling the supplied current is controlled in a pulsed, amplitude modulated manner with an amplitude modulated modulation frequency of 10 Hz. or less, whereby essentially full amplitude of the amplitude modulated current is achieved within a rise time corresponding to 1 cycle of the base frequency or less at the start of a pulse.

Method for continuous casting and device for carrying out the method

A device for continuous or semi-continuous casting of metal comprising a cooled mold ( ) and an induction coil ( ) arranged at the top end of the mold. The mold comprises in its top end a plurality of hollow, old segments ( ) separated from each other by partitions ( ), which all comprise an electrically insulating barrier. Both the mold segments and the partitions are oriented essentially in the casting direction. Each hollow top end mold segment comprises a core of a mechanically supporting bar or beam ( ) arranged within the hollow mold segment such that it is surrounded by the hollow mold segment. The core exhibits superior mechanical properties in relation to the mold.
