A method for handling biometric templates is disclosed for an authenticating device applying biometric authentication. The method comprises acquiring a set of biometric data associated with a prospect user, and acquiring a decryption key (associated with an encrypted biometric template associated with an enrolled user of the authenticating device) from a key carrying device external to the authenticating device responsive to the key carrying device being in a vicinity of the authenticating device. The method also comprises retrieving, from a storage medium, at least a part of the encrypted biometric template associated with the enrolled user, decrypting the retrieved part of the biometric template using the acquired decryption key and performing an attempt to authenticate the prospect user as the enrolled user based on a comparison between the acquired set of biometric data and the decrypted part of the biometric template.

The present invention relates to a communication arrangement configured to allow wired communication between an electronic host device and an electrical slave device, such as between a smart phone and a smart card during an enrollment process. Method, apparatus, and system for exchanging information in a communication system having a plurality of transmission schemes are presented. A first power level is selected at which slices of information are capable of being exchanged over a communication link at a first slice rate. A first transmission scheme is selected that produces an acceptable link performance when exchanging information over the communication link at the first power level. The first power level is reduced to a second power level. A second transmission scheme is selected for exchanging information over the communication link at the second power level that produces at least the acceptable link performance produced when exchanging information over the communication link at the first power level using the first transmission scheme. Slices of information are exchanged over the communication link at the second power level and at a second slice rate using the second transmission scheme. The second slice rate is at most equal to the first slice rate multiplied by a ratio of the first power level divided by the second power level.

Method, apparatus, and system for optimizing transmission power and bit rate in multi-transmission scheme communication systems

A mobile station adapted to be used in a radio communications system includes a receiver apparatus adapted to receive blocks of distorted information bits at a first rate from a transmitter via a communications link, and a first detecting apparatus adapted to detect information bits from the distorted information bits. The mobile station also includes a second detecting apparatus adapted, when the quality of the received blocks of information bits is above a given level, to detect information bits from the distorted information bits using fewer computation resources than the first detecting apparatus.

A receiver section recovers the in-phase and quadrature components of a linear modulated data signal. The in-phase signal is sampled and quantized producing an in-phase sample stream, and the quadrature phase signal is sampled and quantized producing a quadrature sample stream. The in-phase sample stream and the quadrature sample stream are both over-sampled at a rate of N times a symbol rate of the data signal. A decimation section filters the quantized in-phase sample stream and the quantized quadrature sample stream to produce a reduced in-phase sample stream and a reduced quadrature sample stream at a rate of M times the symbol rate, wherein M is less than or equal to N. A decision component calculates the magnitude of a combination of an in-phase sample and a quadrature sample at M corresponding sample points in the reduced in-phase sample stream and the reduced quadrature sample stream, respectively, and then forms an in-phase symbol stream and a quadrature symbol stream using the in-phase sample and the quadrature sample, respectively, associated with the sample point having a largest magnitude.

Technique for demodulating a linear modulated data signal in a communications system

A digital communication receiver communicates with a digital communication transmitter across a communication channel and has: a channel estimator, which provide a channel estimate of the communication channel based on a received signal; an equalizer, which estimates a sequence of transmitted symbols and provides a sequence of decided symbols based on the received signal and the channel estimate; and a channel tracker, which produces an updated channel estimate based on the received signal and the decided symbols, and which supplies the updated channel estimate to the equalizer. The digital communication receiver has a controller, which receives channel quality indicative data associated with an output from the equalizer, determines whether these data fail to meet a predetermined criterion, and, if so, supplies an enabling control signal to the channel tracker.

Digital communication receiver and a method for the operation thereof

The invention relates to: A method for estimating residual noise in the frequency range () of a desired part () of a signal to a corresponding apparatus and to a mobile telephone utilizing the method. The object of the present invention is to generate a measure for the residual noise in a signal. The problem is solved in that the amplitude of the signal () comprising the noise is modified, and the signal () is combined with the modified signal () to create a noise estimation measure (). The invention may e.g. be used in digital radio communications systems to contribute to the monitoring of link quality and therefore to improve payload throughput. One of the advantages of the invention is that an indication of link quality at an early stage in the receiver is provided.

Method and apparatus for selecting an access technology in a multi-mode terminal are provided. Information is exchanged between a multi-mode terminal and at least one base station using a first access technology, the multi-mode terminal being capable of exchanging information with the at least one base station using a number of access technologies. The type of information exchanged is identified, and at least a second access technology is determined, different from the first access technology, that is capable of exchanging information of the identified information type. The first and at least second access technologies form a set of compatible access technologies. A determination is made as to the minimum radiated power level needed to exchange the information with the at least one base station for each of the compatible access technologies. An optimal access technology requiring a lowest amount of battery energy among the set of compatible access technologies is selected to maintain the minimum radiated power level needed to exchange the information between the multi-mode terminal and the at least one base station.

In a communication system including a transmitter and a receiver, the receiver is synchronized with the transmitter, and a modulation type in a signal transmitted by the transmitter and received by the receiver is detected. A first portion of the received signal is correlated with one or more signals representing modulation types used by the communication system to detect the type of modulation being used in the received signal. Synchronization is established between the transmitter and the receiver. The first portion may be correlated with each of one or more different signals representing various modulation types used in the communication system to detect the type of modulation used. Alternately, the first portion of the received signal may be derotated by different amounts to produce a plurality of derotated signals that are correlated with the signal representing modulation used by the communication system in order to detect the type of modulation used. If the correlation does not result in a determination of the modulation type, either a predetermined modulation type is selected as the modulation type, or the decision of the modulation type is made at a later stage based, e.g., on a comparison of signal qualities or equalization results.

A method and system for blind detection of modulation in a wireless telecommunications network. In accordance with the method and system, a plurality of bursts are transmitted over an air interface to a receiving station using a first modulation scheme. Modulation detection statistics for the plurality of received bursts are calculated at the receiving station. Based on the modulation statistics, however, it is determined that at least one of the plurality of received bursts has been transmitted using a second modulation scheme. As a result, the modulation detection statistics are analyzed to identify a single modulation scheme that was most likely used in modulating the plurality of bursts. Any faulty received bursts, for which a detected modulation scheme differs from the identified single modulation scheme, are then processed to reduce the effect of the faulty bursts.

A method and system for communicating data between an integrated circuit and each of a first device and a second device. Communications between the integrated circuit and the first device use a first interface protocol, while communications between the integrated circuit and the second device use a second interface protocol. Both interface protocols, however, share the same data bus and clock bus. To communicate using the second interface protocol, the first device, which uses the first interface protocol, is first deactivated by sending address data via the shared data bus that does not identify the first device, thereby causing the first device to enter an inactive state until a stop condition is detected on the shared data bus. In order to increase the resolution of signals input to a power amplifier, this system includes a power control circuit which utilizes sigma delta modulated values which are stored in a memory device. These values, after retrieval from an addressable memory, are supplied only to a low pass filter before being sent to the control input of the power amplifier. The use of sigma delta modulated values can result in a reduction of hardware within the power control circuit of communication devices and increase the signal resolution by moving noise elements from the signal.

Methods and systems for generating timing signals in remote units which can be used in a radiocommunication system are described. A high accuracy clock can be used to provide a timing reference signal for a processor in the remote unit during times when highly accurate timing signals are required. During periods of low activity, the high accuracy clock can be turned off and a low accuracy clock can be used to generate the reference timing signals for the processor. Periodically, the accuracy of the low accuracy clock can be checked by determining a number of low accuracy clock pulses which are generated between system timing signals created based upon the high accuracy clock pulses. In this way, when the low accuracy clock is relied upon to create the system tuning signals, the accuracy is sufficient to enable the processor to recognize when it is time to again power up the high accuracy clock. Moreover, checking the accuracy of the low accuracy clock enables the processor to provide error compensation signals to a real time clock function which relies upon the low accuracy clock pulses for determining a current time.
