A method performed by a mobile communication unit () when operating in stand-by mode in a wireless cellular communication network. The receiver is activated in periods of relatively short duration (&#x3c4;) to receive paging indicators () from the serving base station () and to receive identifying signals from the remote base station (). After the first period a likelihood is assessed that a remote cell has been detected, and following the first period the receiver is activated in a second period of a duration (&#x3c4;) depending an the assessed likelihood. If a remote cell has likely been detected, the second duration is longer than the first duration. Most of its stand-by time the mobile terminal will not detect a new cell, and most of the periods with the receiver activated will therefore be of the short first duration, the Power consumption of the receiver will be correspondingly reduced, and the stand-by time is correspondingly increased.

Cell search scheduling in a wireless cellular communication network

In a RAKE receiver delays associated with multipath signals are determined by subtracting power values associated with sidelobes of a peak value for each of the multipath signals. The determination can be performed in two stages, in the first stage the determination of the delays is made without accounting for a phase difference between adjacent multipath signals, while in the second stage the determinations are made accounting for the phase difference.

Subtractive multipath delay detection

Methods of scaling path delay values in a communication system, in which estimates of received symbols corresponding to the path delays are combined, include the step of determining a respective weight value for each path delay based on relative correlations of the path delays. The weight values may be determined by getting a plurality of path delay values; identifying the path delay values as either peak values or neighbor values; organizing the peak values and neighbor values into groups, with each group including at least one peak value and at least one neighbor value; for each group, determining a set of weight values; and checking the groups for duplicated path delay values and selecting a weight value from the weight values determined for the duplicated path delay values as either one of the weight values for the duplicated path delay values or a combination of the weight values for the duplicated path delay values. Method and apparatus for soft symbol scaling

Method and system are disclosed for providing advanced RAKE delay control in wireless communications systems. The RAKE delay control method and system of the invention is capable of tracking presently known paths over time and merging the tracking results with new path searcher results. The invention is particularly suitable for devices where the resources (e.g., computational load, power) available for detecting the multipath components are limited. The result is a resource efficient architecture for positioning the RAKE fingers to best extract the signal power available in the channel and to utilize the inherent diversity due to the multipath nature of the signal.
