The invention provides a process for removing mercaptans from a gas stream comprising natural gas or inert gas and mercaptans, the process comprising the steps of: (a) contacting a first gas stream comprising natural gas or inert gas and mercaptans with a hydrodesulphurization catalyst in the presence of hydrogen in a hydrodesulphurization unit to obtain a second gas stream comprising natural gas or inert gas, which is depleted of mercaptans and enriched in HS; (b) removing HS from the second gas stream comprising natural gas or inert gas in a HS removal unit to obtain a purified gas stream comprising natural gas or inert gas, which is depleted of mercaptans.

The invention provides a method for disposal of di-sulphide compounds having the general formula of R&#x2014;S&#x2014;S&#x2014;R, wherein R is an alkyl group, the method comprising the steps of: (a) combusting said di-sulphide compounds in the presence of an oxygen-containing gas in a sulphur dioxide generation zone, whereby at least part of the di-sulphide compounds is converted to sulphur dioxide to obtain a gas stream comprising sulphur dioxide; (b) reacting the gas stream comprising sulphur dioxide with hydrogen sulphide to obtain elemental sulphur.

The invention provides a process for treating a loaded solvent stream having a time-varying contaminant concentration, the process comprising the steps of: (a) providing a plurality of hold-up tanks; (b) feeding the loaded solvent stream in dependence on its contaminant concentration to one or more of the hold-up tanks and; (c) allowing lowed solvent to flow from the plurality of hold-up tanks to obtain a smoothed loaded solvent stream having a reduced time-varying contaminant concentration. The invention further provides a treating unit comprising a circuit for circulating a solvent stream, which circuit includes a device for smoothing contaminant peak concentrations, said device comprising a plurality of hold-up tanks each hold-up tank having at least one inlet and an outlet equipped with an outlet valve, the device further comprising an inlet distributor allowing the control of solvent flow to one or more of the hold-up tanks.
