A magnetizable abrasive particle is presented. The magnetizable abrasive particle has a ceramic particle having an outer surface. The magnetizable abrasive particle also has a magnetic coating layer applied to the outer surface of the ceramic particle prior to sintering. The sintered magnetizable particle is responsive to a magnetic field.

The granules are useful, for example, as roofing granules.

A method of making abrasive particles includes: providing a slurry comprising non-colloidal solid particles and a liquid vehicle; forming at least a portion of the slurry into shaped bodies contacting a substrate; at least partially drying the shaped bodies to provide shaped abrasive precursor particles; separating at least a portion of the shaped abrasive precursor particles from the substrate; and converting at least a portion of the shaped abrasive precursor particles into shaped abrasive particles. The shaped abrasive particles comprise alpha alumina having an average crystal grain size of 0.8 to 8 microns and an apparent density that is at least 92 percent of the true density. A method of making sintered abrasive particles includes passing alumina precursor particles through a flame under conditions such that they are converted to alpha alumina. The precursor particles comprise a precursor of alpha alumina and have an average particle size of less than or equal to 500 microns. Sintered abrasive particles have a cellular microstructure comprising alpha alumina crystal grains of alpha alumina having a maximum dimension of less than about 3 microns are also disclosed. The sintered abrasive particles have an average particle size of less than or equal to 500 microns, and are essentially free of seed particles and alpha alumina grain size modifiers. Abrasive articles comprising a binder and a plurality of the sintered abrasive particles are also disclosed.

A molding operation produces an extractor array by providing a mold having a plurality of cavities therein, each cavity being adapted to form an extractor suitable for coupling to an LED die; filling the mold with a plurality of glass particles; heating the glass particles above glass transition temperatures thereof so that the particles are reshaped to conform to the cavity shapes; and forming a land layer that extends between the cavities. The land layer maintains the extractors in a fixed spatial relationship with each other for subsequent handling or processing, such as a simultaneous polishing operation or in attaching the extractor array to a corresponding LED array.

Disclosed herein is a ceramic comprising: at least two different metal oxides, the at least two different metal oxides comprising TiOand LaOor TiOand BaO; less than 20% by weight SiO; less than 20% by weight BO; and less than 40% by weight PO; the ceramic having a glass transition temperature, T, and a crystallization onset temperature, T, and the difference between Tand Tis at least 5K. The ceramic may comprise additional metal oxides. Also disclosed herein is a method of making an article using the ceramic; typically, the ceramic is heated above the T, shaped, and then cooled.

The glass contains not more than 10 percent by weight collectively AsO, BO, GeO, PO, SiO, TeO, and VO, based on the total weight of the glass. The first and the second metal oxides are each selected from the group consisting of YO, REO, MgO, TiO, CrO, CuO, NiO, FeO, ZrO, HfOand complex metal oxides thereof. At least a portion of the glass may be converted to crystals.
