Nail enamel compositions of the present invention for coating natural or synthetic human nails broadly include the ingredients of one or more film forming components, preferably nitrocellulose having a molecular weight greater than 56,000, one or more solvents and bismuth oxychloride.

Nail enamel compositions of the present invention for coating natural or synthetic human nails broadly include the ingredients of one or more film forming components, one or more solvents and aluminum particles in the form of platelets. The resulting composition will provide a nail enamel which forms a film upon drying having a mirrorlike appearance.

A transparent nail enamel composition includes small pieces of light-reflecting decorative material in the nature of glitters, micas and/or other large-sized particles. The glitter is suspended in the nail enamel composition using fumed silica. The nail enamel composition exhibits both transparent wet and dry state clarity.

A nail enamel composition of non-toxic components forms a decorative irregular film over natural or synthetic human nails. Nail enamel compositions include a primary film forming polymer, a solvent and one or more plasticizers, for example, compounds of ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are the same or different and represent linear or branched alkyl groups containing from one to 18 carbon atoms; and R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are the same or different and represent linear or branched alkyl groups containing from one to five carbon atoms, provided that one of R.sub.3 or R.sub.4 may be hydrogen. The resulting nail enamel compositions are suitable for use as base coats, color coats, clear coats and protective top coats.
