The plant for producing metallic pellets from a salt-added magnesium or alloys thereof comprises a metal-melting furnace, a centrifugal pelletizer with a perforated bowl and a cylindrical pellet-collecting chamber. A hopper is provided in said cylindrical chamber to divide the latter into two concentric zones open from below, of which one zone is adapted for collecting salvage resulting from the pellet formation process, while the other zone is for pellet collection. Provision of said zones makes it possible to considerably reduce the content of salts in magnesium pellets or in those of alloys thereof, as a great proportion of the salts get into the hopper and is withdrawn from the chamber as process waste, whereas the magnesium pellets settle down in the other zone and are then forwarded for further processing.

A method of producing fine-disperse alkylated silica compounds, characterized in that starting fine-disperse silica is subjected to treatment with water vapors at a temperature of 110.degree.-120.degree. C to attain the humidification degree of from 2 to 40 micromoles H.sub.2 O/m.sup.2 SiO.sub.2, the thus humidified silica being then treated with vapors of alkylchlorosilane at a temperature of 250.degree. to 310.degree. C. The method of the invention allows controlling the concentration of grafted alkyl groups in the resultant product within the range of from 4.7 to 8.0 micromoles of grafted alkyl groups per m.sup.2 of the surface of SiO.sub.2. Starting silica can be modified with oxides of metals, such as aluminium, titanium, iron or zirconium oxides, the resultant products exhibiting good hydrophobic properties when used as thickeners for lubrication materials.

Method of producing fine disperse alkylated silica compounds

The invention relates to magnesium-containing mixtures, in the form of granules of a particular shape, made by the introduction of a salt to liquid metal at a temperature of 670.degree.-720.degree.C, heated to a temperature of 670.degree.-730.degree.C, composed of metal chlorides and fluorides not reducible by magnesium, taken separately or in combination, and having an initial crystallization temperature below that of the granulated metal, and a density at the temperature of 670.degree.-730.degree.C equal to 0.95-1.2 of the density of the metal. The molten mixture is atomized by centrifugal force with subsequent cooling of the thus produced discrete particles by air flow. The mixture obtained in producing granules of magnesium or its alloys comprises in weight per cent: 65-97 of granulated magnesium, 0.3-16 of magnesium and alkali metal chlorides, 0.1-10 of one of the fluorides, up to 3 of alkaline-earth metal chlorides, and up to 6 of magnesium oxide. The above mixture can also comprise in weight per cent: 60-97 of granulated magnesium alloy, 0.3-16 of magnesium and alkali metal chlorides, 0.1-10 of one of the fluorides, 0.3-10 of alkaline-earth metal chlorides, and not over 5.0 of magnesium oxide.
