The present disclosure relates generally to methods and apparatus for cargo inspection and, more particularly, to X-ray based inspection systems providing radiographic imaging and material discrimination with adaptive control of X-ray source dependent upon characteristics of the cargo under inspection. X-rays are generated utilizing a dual energy interlaced betatron by generation of X-ray pulses with lower- and higher-energies during the same betatron acceleration cycle.

Adaptive cargo inspection based on multi-energy betatron

Apparatus and methods for Compton scattering radiography employing a variable energy X-ray source and a detector capable of detecting the temporal intensity profile of scattered X-ray pulses disposed on one side of an object to be imaged. Based on analysis of the measurement of the instantaneous intensity of the detected photons and the beam position relative to the object, an image is generated. Each voxel can be reconstructed to yield a measure of variation in the density of the material of the object.

X-ray backscatter inspection system

An X-ray based inspection systems providing radiographic imaging for cargo inspection and material discrimination with adaptive control dependent upon characteristics of the cargo under inspection. A packet of X-ray pulses with controllable packet duration is produced that allows multi-energy material discrimination in a single scan line and real-time adjustment of packet duration to adapt to cargo attenuation. In addition, adaptive dynamic adjustment of the operational characteristic of the detector channels increases the effective dynamic range and as a result increases the penetration and range of thicknesses where material discrimination is possible. The material discrimination technique is applied within a single packet of short pulses of several hundred nanoseconds. Feedback from the detection system is used to control the packet duration of each packet of X-ray pulses in order to adapt scan parameters to the object that is being imaged.

System and method for adaptive X-ray cargo inspection

Methods for discriminating among x-ray beams of distinct energy content. A first volume of scintillation medium converts energy of incident penetrating radiation into scintillation light which is extracted from a scintillation light extraction region by a plurality of optical waveguides that convert the scintillation light to light of a longer wavelength. An x-ray beam initially incident upon the first volume of scintillation medium and traversing the first volume is then incident on a second volume of scintillation medium. The first and second scintillation media may be separated by an absorber or one or more further volumes of scintillation medium, and may also have differential spectral sensitivities. Scintillation light from the first and second scintillation volumes is detected in respective detectors and processed to yield a measure of respective low energy and high-energy components of the incident x-ray beam.

X-ray inspection of moving cargo based on acquiring multiple image lines at one time or substantially at one time. An X-ray source with multiple-beam electron beam targets creates multiple parallel X-ray fan beams. X-ray inspection systems and methods employ such multiple-beam sources for purposes of inspecting fast moving cargo.

A detector and methods for inspecting material on the basis of scintillator coupled by wavelength-shifting optical fiber to one or more photo-detectors, with a temporal integration of the photo-detector signal. An unpixelated volume of scintillation medium converts energy of incident penetrating radiation into scintillation light which is extracted from a scintillation light extraction region by a plurality of optical waveguides. This geometry provides for efficient and compact detectors, enabling hitherto unattainable geometries for backscatter detection and for energy discrimination of incident radiation. Additional energy-resolving transmission configurations are enabled as are skew- and misalignment compensation.

X-ray inspection using wavelength-shifting fiber-coupled scintillation detectors

Methods and systems for x-ray inspection of an object using pulses whose spectral composition varies during the course of each pulse. A temporal sequence of pulses of penetrating radiation is generated such that the spectral content of each pulse evolves with time. The pulses are formed into a beam that is scanned across the object and detected after traversing the object. The detector signal is processed to derive at least one material characteristic of the object, such as effective atomic number, on the basis of temporal evolution of the detector signal during the course each pulse of the sequence of pulses. The time intervals may be predetermined, or else adapted based on features of the detected signal.
