Methods and systems are provided that use resistivity log data to estimate water saturation of formation rock and/or other useful formation parameters (such as CEC) in a manner that accounts for one or more electrically conductive mineral components contained in the formation rock.

A hydrocarbon well downhole fluid acquisition and injection system for selecting and stimulating zones based on operations of the system. Target depths in a hydrocarbon well are identified, and reservoir fluids may be acquired or tagging agents may be injected at the target depths using a specialized hydrocarbon well downhole fluid acquisition and injection system. The well may be operated to generate flow of fluids, and the reservoir fluids may be monitored and assessed for the presence of tagging agents. The presence of tagging agents and the fluid sample may be assessed to identify zones that may be candidates for stimulation or other operations.

Embodiments provide techniques for using data from a select set of wells to develop correlations between surface-measured properties, downhole coring parameters, and properties typically determined from subsurface measurements (e.g., from logging tool responses, core analysis, or other subsurface measurements). Techniques for determining an amount of chert in a rock formation include identifying first logging data for a selected zone of a first subterranean formation that includes chert, quartz, and zircon; identifying second logging data for a second subterranean formation that is different than the first subterranean formation, the second subterranean formation including chert, quartz, and zircon; determining a first volumetric ratio of quartz to zircon in the selected zone based on the first logging data; determining a second volumetric ratio of quartz to zircon based on the second logging data; determining a maximum value of the second volumetric ratio; and calculating, based on the first and second volumetric ratios and the maximum value of the second volumetric ratio, a volumetric percentage of chert in the selected zone.
