A turbomachine seal assembly includes a plurality of sealing strips configured and disposed to inhibit a flow of fluid from passing through a channel defined by a first member and a second member. At least one of the plurality of sealing strips includes a paddle element that is configured and disposed to create a fluid recirculation zone at the channel. The fluid recirculation zone further inhibits the flow of fluid through the channel.

An adverse pressure gradient seal mechanism for use with variable speed components. The adverse pressure gradient seal mechanism may include a number of labyrinth teeth positioned on a component and an adverse pressure gradient seal positioned between a pair of the labyrinth teeth. The adverse pressure gradient seal may include a number of strips with each of the strips having an angled end.

A steam turbine includes a rotor having a plurality of early stages and a stator portion surrounding a portion of the rotor and arranged such that a leakage region exists between the stator portion and the rotor and having a cooling steam channel that passes cooling steam from one portion of the stator portion to the leakage region. The turbine also includes at least one cooling steam transmission channel axially displaced about the rotor that receives the cooling steam from the leakage region and provides it to at least a portion of the early stages.

A turbine is provided and includes a spacer having an annular body formed with opposing outward and inward surfaces and an orifice extending through the body from the outward to the inward surface, an assembly to secure the spacer around a rotor axially between sequential buckets of a forward turbine stage and an aft turbine stage, the spacer forming an annular passage around the rotor into which a fluid flows through the orifice and a circuit fluidly coupled to the annular passage to deliver the fluid from between the sequential buckets of the forward turbine stage and the aft turbine stage to an axial location forward of the forward turbine stage.
