Neopentyl glycol bis(diphenyl phosphate) liquid compositions are described that comprise from about 75% to about 90%, by weight, of neopentyl glycol bis(diphenyl phosphate), less than about 5% by weight of cyclic product, less than about 8% by weight of triphenyl phosphate, and with a Pcontent of no less than about 1%, by weight. These compositions are made by continuously adding neopentyl glycol to a diaryl chlorophosphate mixture at elevated temperature, under vacuum, and in the presence of a catalyst.

A process for the alkylation of triphenylphosphate by reaction of triphenylphosphate with an olefin in the presence of an effective amount of a solid acid catalyst selected from the group consisting of at least one zeolite, heteropolyacid or salt thereof, metal triflate, non-aryl group-containing metal sulfonic acid, metal halide Lewis acid, or compatible mixture of any such catalyst.

Alkylation of triphenylphosphate

A method for decolorizing and stabilizing alkylphenyl esters of phosphoric acid which comprises contacting the esters with an effective amount of a benzofuranone (e.g., is 5,7-di-t-butyl-3-(3,4 di-methylphenyl)3H-benzofuran-2-one) for a sufficient length of time to decolorize and stabilize the esters against subsequent color formation.

The isomerization of an alkylated phenol composition that contains an ortho-alkyl substituted phenol component to isomerize and reduce the level of ortho-alkyl substituted phenol component therein can be accomplished by heating that composition in the presence of a catalytically effective amount of a solid acid catalyst to carry out such isomerization and reduction in the level of ortho-alkyl substituted phenol. Examples of suitable solid acid catalysts can be selected from the H-form zeolites, the supported sulfonic acids, and the heteropoly acids. The resulting isomerized product can be subsequently phosphorylated.

A process for forming a supported metal carbide catalyst, for example, a Group VIB transition metal carbide, such as tungsten carbide, which process comprises the calcination of a carbon support that has been impregnated with a metal carbide precursor comprising a water soluble salt of: (1) a cation comprising nitrogen-hydrogen bonded moieties, such as a guanidine cation; and (2) an anion, such as a tungstate anion, comprising metal-oxygen bonded moieties, so that upon calcination the product formed is the metal carbide and the by-products comprise ammonia and carbon dioxide.
