Techniques are disclosed for programming a luminaire with location information, referred to herein as commissioning. Location information may include relative location information (e.g., the position of the luminaire relative to a reference point) and/or absolute location information (e.g., global coordinates for the luminaire). A commissioned luminaire can be configured to emit its location information via light-based communication (LCom). In some cases, the luminaire can be commissioned manually, by hard coding the luminaire with its location either at the luminaire itself or using a device (e.g., a smartphone, tablet, or a dedicated luminaire commissioning device) to program the luminaire with location information. In some cases, the luminaire can be commissioned automatically. In some cases, the luminaire may be configured to provide visual, aural, or tactile feedback to indicate that the luminaire has not received location data or that the luminaire has been moved.

Commissioning a luminaire with location information

Aspects of the present disclosure include arrays of motion sensors that may be used to monitor a space to determine occupancy characteristics of the space, such as whether or not the space is occupied and the number of people located within the space. The array of motion sensors may be operatively connected to one or more building system components, such as lighting and HVAC equipment and can be used for adjusting an operating condition of the building system component based on whether a space is occupied.

Techniques are disclosed for detecting stationary presence using IR sensor array. A number of IR images may be captured. Of the IR images captured by the IR sensor array certain pixels can be identified as causing false triggers. These pixels can be identified and filtered to be ignored. The non-filtered pixels of IR images may be averaged over various time intervals to calculate a number of average IR frames. The difference between these average IR frames provides a delta frame. A mask frame may be calculated as the summation of delta frames over time, and the value of the mask frame may be used to detect a stationary human presence even when no delta value is calculated. Alternatively, the mask frame may be used to calculate a background frame that represents the IR signature of stationary or cyclical objects within the scanned area that are not intended to trigger the presence detection system. A stationary presence may be determined by subtracting the background frame from a current average IR frame.

Human presence detection commissioning techniques

A display, a circuit arrangement for a display and a method of operating a display are disclosed. In an embodiment a display includes a voltage supply and a plurality of pixels. Each pixel includes a given number of light emitters, the light emitters being arranged in parallel electric lines with a light emitter per electric line, wherein the voltage supply is adapted to provide an electric voltage to each of the parallel electric lines. Each electric line comprises a current control element, wherein the current control element of an electric line is configured to control an electric current flowing through the light emitter arranged in the electric line.

Display, circuit arrangement for a display and method of operating a display

Techniques for determining an actual position of a portable device are disclosed. In an embodiment, a two-tier triangulation and wireless beacon-enabled luminaire detection approach is implemented. An estimated position of a device is determined using wireless (e.g., wireless beacon) triangulation based on a signal parameter of a signal received from a wireless access point. The field of view of the portable device may be used to estimate positions of luminaires proximate the portable device. The actual position of the luminaires may be determined from the estimated position by querying a database. A second triangulation may be performed using the known position of the luminaires to determine the position of the portable device with respect to the actual position of the luminaire.

Wireless beacon-enabled luminaire identification system and method for determining the position of a portable device

Disclosed herein are embodiments of an occupancy monitoring system. The occupancy monitoring system includes a thermal sensor configured to monitor a gate (e.g., entry way) to a space. The thermal sensor includes a pixel array that generates a pixel value for each pixel in the pixel array, and the pixel value corresponds to a quantity of heat or thermal information detected by a pixel. The occupancy monitoring system acquires pixel values for the pixels of the pixel array. The occupancy monitoring system determines whether there is a change in occupancy of the space based on changes to a first region (or first pixel cluster) of the pixel array and a second region (or second pixel cluster) of the pixel array over time. The occupancy monitoring system may adjust lighting, temperature, and/or security systems for the space as the occupancy changes.

Techniques are disclosed for enhancing indoor navigation using light-based communication (LCom). In some cases, an LCom-enabled luminaire configured as described herein may acquire user data from a local computing device and relay it to a server that tracks and analyzes the data to assess statistics for the luminaire's local spatial environment. The disclosed luminaire may receive from a local computing device a request for indoor navigation to a target of interest, such as a remote computing device. The luminaire may relay that request to a downstream luminaire, which delivers the request to the target. The target may respond with data that allows for tracking of its location and indoor navigation thereto, regardless of whether that target is moving or stationary. In a network of such luminaires, data distribution via inter-luminaire communication may be provided, for example, via an optical interface or other wired or wireless communication.

Techniques for indoor navigation with occupancy tracking and location tracking via light-based communication

Techniques are disclosed for detecting stationary presence using IR sensor data. A number of IR images may be captured based on IR sensor data and these IR images may be averaged over various time intervals to calculate a number of average IR frames. A mask frame may be calculated as the summation of delta frames over time, and the value of the mask frame may be used to detect a stationary human presence even when no delta value is calculated. Human presence detection techniques

Techniques are disclosed for detecting changes in occupancy as well as the number of occupants within an area. Detection of one or more occupants entering or leaving the area may be accomplished using a sensor having a quantity of pixels. The pixels may be configured to receive thermal energy emitted from one or more objects present in the area, including from one or more occupants. In response to receiving the emitted thermal energy, the sensor may be configured to create thermal images of the area. These thermal images may include a plurality of thermal intensity values associated with one or more pixels of the sensor. Two or more thermal images can be compared to identify a change in thermal intensity values. A change in the occupancy of the area may be determined by based on the identified change in thermal intensity values.

Thermal image occupant detection

Techniques are disclosed for locating an occupant within an area. The system includes a first sensor including a first plurality of pixels for receiving a thermal energy input from the occupant within a first field of view (FOV) and a second sensor including a second plurality of pixels for receiving the input within a second FOV. A first distance from the occupant to the first sensor is determined based on the input received by at least one pixel of the first plurality of pixels and a first sensor location from an origin. A second distance from the occupant to the second sensor is also determined based on the input received by at least one pixel of the second plurality of pixels and a second sensor location relative to the origin. A coordinate position for the occupant relative to the origin is determined based on the determined first and second distances.

Occupant position tracking using imaging sensors

Techniques are disclosed for identifying and controlling light-based communication (LCom)-enabled luminaires. In some cases, the techniques include a luminaire communicating its ID to a computing device via one or more LCom signals. In some cases, a user may be able to aim a rear-facing camera of a smartphone at the luminaire desired to be controlled. Once the luminaire is in the field of view of the camera, the ID of the luminaire can be determined using one or more LCom signals received from the luminaire. The ID of the luminaire may be, for example, its internet protocol (IP) address or media access control (MAC) address or another unique identifier. Once a luminaire has been identified, commands can be issued to the luminaire to adjust one or more characteristics of the light output, such as changing the dimming percentage of the light output.

Identifying and controlling light-based communication (LCom)-enabled luminaires

Techniques are disclosed for programming a luminaire position for light-based communication (LCom) luminaires within an array of luminaires using position information provided by passing mobile computing devices. This position information can be received as, for example, as a specific coordinate (e.g., x-y coordinates of a grid-based map) or as movement data of the mobile computing device relative to an initial known reference location. The disclosed techniques can be used, for example, to reduce the time, labor, and expense associated with programming and re-programming a luminaire with a luminaire position, and to increase the flexibility of navigation system installations. In some cases, the disclosed techniques can be used, for example, to improve the precision of a luminaire position programmed into a newly installed luminaire.
