A system may include a Class-D stage comprising a first high-side switch coupled between a supply voltage and a first output terminal of the Class-D stage, a second high-side switch coupled between the supply voltage and a second output terminal of the Class-D stage, a first low-side switch coupled between a ground voltage and the first output terminal, and a second low-side switch coupled between the ground voltage and the second output terminal. The system may also include current sensing circuitry comprising a first sense resistor coupled between the first low-side switch and the ground voltage, such that an output current through a load coupled between the first output terminal and the second output terminal causes a first sense voltage proportional to the output current across the first sense resistor when the first low-side switch is activated. The current sensing circuitry may also include a second sense resistor coupled between the second low-side switch and the ground voltage, such that an output current through the load causes a second sense voltage proportional to the output current across the second sense resistor when the second low-side switch is activated. The system may also include measurement circuitry configured to measure the first sense voltage and the second sense voltage to determine the output current.

Common-mode insensitive current-sensing topology in full-bridge driver with high-side and low-side energy matching calibration

A system may include a Class-D stage comprising a first high-side switch coupled between a supply voltage and a first output terminal of the Class-D stage, a second high-side switch coupled between the supply voltage and a second output terminal of the Class-D stage, a first low-side switch coupled between a ground voltage and the first output terminal, and a second low-side switch coupled between the ground voltage and the second output terminal. The system may also include current sensing circuitry comprising a first sense resistor coupled between the first high-side switch and the supply voltage, such that an output current through a load coupled between the first output terminal and the second output terminal causes a first sense voltage proportional to the output current across the first sense resistor when the first high-side switch is activated. Common-mode insensitive current-sensing topology in full-bridge driver

A detector for measuring a resistance of a variable resistance sensor (VRS) that varies with respect to a time-varying stimulus (e.g., temperature) includes a voltage reference having variation with respect to operating conditions and a linearized digital-to-analog converter (LIDAC) having a known transconductance that uses the voltage reference to generate a current for pumping into the VRS to cause the VRS to generate a voltage sensed by the detector. The sensed voltage includes error due to the variation of the voltage reference. The detector also includes a programmable gain amplifier (PGA) that gains up the sensed voltage to generate an output signal, an ADC that converts the output signal to a digital value, and a digital processor that computes the resistance of the VRS using the digital value and the known transconductance. The PGA is non-varying with respect to the time-varying stimulus.

Detector and method for measuring a resistance of a variable resistance sensor whose resistance varies with respect to a time-varying stimulus

A system includes a first sensed voltage generated as a product of the first voltage reference and an unknown scalar, a second sensed voltage generated as a product of the first voltage reference and a known scalar, and an amplifier having gain error that generates a second voltage reference (first voltage reference or scaled version thereof). An ADC uses the second voltage reference to generate first and second digital values, representing the first and second sensed voltages, that contain error caused by the second voltage reference gain error. A processor uses the known scalar and a ratio based on the first and second digital values to remove the error from the first digital value. The first sensed voltage may be generated by pumping a current into a variable resistance sensor (VRS) whose resistance varies with respect to a time-varying stimulus (e.g., temperature) and is proportional to the unknown scalar.

A method for controlling a current mode switch mode power supply may include detecting a peak inductor current of a power inductor of the current mode switch mode power supply, estimating a load current based on a variable of a main control loop of the current mode switch mode power supply, detecting, within a main control loop of the current mode switch mode power supply, whether the load current is lower in magnitude than an estimated boundary condition current threshold, the estimated boundary condition current threshold defining a crossover threshold between operation of the current mode switch mode power supply in a continuous conduction mode and operation of the current mode switch mode power supply in a discontinuous conduction mode, and responsive to the load current being lower in magnitude than the estimated boundary condition current, causing pulse skipping of an output signal of the current mode switch mode power supply on an immediately subsequent switching cycle of the current mode switch mode power supply.

Peak current controlled switch mode power supply with embedded adaptive pulse frequency modulation control

A digital-to-analog converter (DAC) for an audio system in a media device, such as a portable media device or smart phone, may be operated to turn off portions of the DAC to reduce power consumption. Segments of a segment-able DAC may be powered off when the output level of the DAC is lower than the full scale output of the DAC. For example, DAC elements within a finite impulse response (FIR) DAC may be turned off when a desired output level can be obtained with less than all DAC elements of the FIR DAC.

Power-saving current-mode digital-to-analog converter (DAC)

A portable audio device may be configured to measure load characteristics of headphones. The device may measure direct current (DC) and/or alternating current (AC) characteristics of the load. These characteristics may be measured by an audio component, such as an audio codec chip or integrated circuit (IC) controller, and reported to software or firmware executing on a processor coupled to the audio component. The software or firmware may then take action based on the measured load characteristics. For example, the load characteristics may be compared to a database of headphones and their known load characteristics to determine a particular headphone model or type of headphone attached to the audio output. The processor may then apply an appropriate equalization curve.

Direct current (DC) and/or alternating current (AC) load detection for audio codec

A method may be provided for powering up or down a playback path comprising a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) for generating a non-ground-centered analog intermediate voltage centered at a common-mode voltage and coupled to a driver for generating a ground-centered playback path output voltage at an output of the driver wherein the output of the driver is clamped via a finite impedance to a ground voltage. The method may include transitioning continuously or in a plurality of discrete steps the analog intermediate voltage from an initial voltage to the common-mode voltage such that the transitioning is substantially inaudible at the output of the driver. A method for operating an output clamp of an output driver stage of a playback path may include transitioning continuously or in a plurality of discrete steps an impedance of the output clamp in order to match an output offset of the output driver stage in order to minimize audio artifacts appearing at an output of the output driver stage.

An audio playback path of an audio apparatus includes a digital modulator, a digital-to-analog converter (DAC), and a power amplifier. The digital modulator receives a playback signal corresponding to playback audio content and generates a digital input signal in accordance with the playback signal. The DAC receives the audio input signal and generates an analog preamplifier signal. The power amplifier generates an audio output signal in accordance with the preamplifier signal and an analog attenuation determined by the analog attenuation signal. The apparatus may include a volume control input to receive a volume control signal and a playback controller configured to perform operations including generating an analog attenuation signal in accordance with the volume control signal, monitoring a playback state indicated by the playback parameters, and responsive to detecting the playback state satisfying the playback criterion, modifying a selected playback parameter to improve a performance parameter of the playback path.

Opportunistic playback state changes for audio devices

An electronic device may be configured to identify a load coupled to the device. The device may measure direct current (DC) and/or alternating current (AC) characteristics of the load to identify the load. The device may then take action based on the identification of the load. For example, a specific transducer may be identified as coupled to the electronic device and an appropriate equalization curve applied to an audio output of the device. The measurement of characteristics of the load may include controlling a reference generator according to a search algorithm, such as a step ramp or binary search, to identify the load. An analog-to-digital converter (ADC) may operate through the search algorithm to provide feedback to digital circuitry regarding how to proceed through the search algorithm to identify the load.

Identification of a load with a search algorithm that controls application of signals to the load and a reference generator

A method may include providing a power supply voltage to a power supply input of a power amplifier by a charge pump power supply having a select input for selecting an operating mode of the charge pump power supply, such that in a first operating mode, the power supply voltage is equal to a first voltage, and such that in a second operating mode the power supply voltage is equal to a fraction of the first voltage; wherein the power amplifier has an audio input for receiving an audio input signal, and an audio output for providing the output signal, and generates the output signal based on the audio input signal. The method may also include selecting an operating mode of the charge pump power supply based on a magnitude of the power supply voltage and a magnitude of the output signal, such that the charge pump power supply operated in the operating mode having the lowest power supply voltage in which a difference between a magnitude of the power supply voltage and a magnitude of the output signal is more than the predetermined threshold voltage.

An audio device may include an electrical terminal for coupling a transducer device to the audio device and an audio circuit for generating an analog audio signal coupled to the electrical terminal. The audio circuit may include a pre-amplifier stage, an amplifier, and a gain selector. The pre-amplifier stage may apply a selectable gain to an audio input signal to generate a pre-amplified analog audio signal, wherein the pre-amplifier stage is powered by a first power supply. The amplifier may amplify the pre-amplified analog audio signal to generate the analog audio signal, wherein the amplifier is powered from a second power supply isolated from the first power supply. The gain selector may select the selectable gain based on a level of the first power supply, such that a difference between the second power supply and the analog audio signal is more than a predetermined headroom threshold voltage.

Systems and methods for supply-based gain control of an audio output signal

In accordance with systems and methods of the present disclosure, an audio device may include an electrical terminal, an audio circuit, and a transducer load detection circuit. The electrical terminal may couple a transducer device to the audio device. The audio circuit may generate an analog audio signal, wherein the analog audio signal is coupled to the electrical terminal. The transducer load detection circuit may detect a load impedance of the transducer device when the transducer device is coupled to the audio device from characteristics measured at the electrical terminal.

In accordance with systems and methods of the present disclosure, an audio device may include an electrical terminal, an audio circuit, and a transducer load detection circuit. The electrical terminal may couple a transducer device to the audio device. The audio circuit may generate an analog audio signal, wherein the analog audio signal is coupled to the electrical terminal The transducer load detection circuit may detect a load impedance of the transducer device when the transducer device is coupled to the audio device from characteristics measured at the electrical terminal.
