An example lighting device includes a luminaire having a miniature illumination light source matrix including miniature illumination light sources configured to be driven by electrical power to emit incoming light rays for illumination lighting. Luminaire further includes an optical lens sheet positioned directly over and abutting the miniature illumination light source matrix and configured to extend over the illumination light source matrix and including an input surface coupled to receive the incoming light rays and an output surface lens array. Input surface is a substantially planar lateral surface extending across an entirety of the miniature illumination light source matrix. Output surface lens array includes a plurality of miniature optical lenses, including a respective miniature optical lens for each of the miniature illumination light sources to refract the incoming light rays into an outputted beam pattern of output light rays for the illumination lighting.

Disclosed are examples of optical/electrical devices including a variable TIR lens assembly having a transducer, an optical lens and an electrowetting cell coupled to an exterior wall of the lens. The electrowetting cell contains two immiscible liquids having different optical and electrical properties. One liquid has a high index of refraction, and the other liquid has a low index of refraction. At least one liquid is electrically conductive. A signal causes the high index of refraction and the low index of refraction liquids to assume various positions within the electrowetting cell along the exterior wall. The properties of the optical lens, e.g. its total internal reflectivity, change depending upon the position of the respective liquids along the exterior wall. The light detection characteristics of the assembly change to receive an input light beam over a range of inputs or over a range of fields of view.

An example lighting device includes a plurality of individually controllable illumination light sources configured to be driven by electrical power to emit light. The lighting device further includes an optical lens positioned over the illumination light sources for beam shaping or steering. The optical lens has a plurality of aspherical, spherical, planar, or freeform surfaces, including an input surface coupled to receive light from the illumination light sources and an output surface. The input surface includes an input peripheral portion and an input central portion. The output surface includes an output lateral portion, an output shoulder portion, and an output body portion. One or both of the input surface or the output surface includes facets.

An example luminaire includes a laser light source, a photoluminescent material and a holographic optical element. The holographic optical element has a hologram optically coupled to the laser light source and to the photoluminescent material. The hologram is configured to distribute light received from the laser light source as a pattern of light to the photoluminescent material.

A tunable luminaire includes a laser light source and at least two different holograms. A beam of light is selectively directed from the laser light source to a first hologram in a first state of the luminaire to enable the luminaire to output light of a first characteristic. A beam of light is selectively directed from the laser light source to a second hologram in a second state of the luminaire to enable the luminaire to output light of a different second characteristic. For example, in the different states, different patterns of light from the holograms pass through and pump different photoluminescent materials, to produce luminaire light outputs in the different states having a different color characteristic. In other examples, in the different states, different patterns of light from the holograms pass through different elements or portions of an optical system to provide light outputs having different distributions.

A configurable lighting device may include a light source, a first lens, one or more second lenses, and a controllable optical modulator. The first lens is coupled to receive and redirect light output from the source. The second lenses are positioned to receive the light redirected by the first lens. The controllable optical modulator is between the first and second lenses. The controllable optical modulator is coupled to receive and spatially modulate light redirected by the first lens. The one or more second lenses are coupled to receive and redirect light modulated by the controllable optical modulator. The optical modulator is selectively controllable to steer and/or shape the light redirected by the first lens to a selected distribution of the light on the one or more second lenses.

An example lighting device has a luminaire. The luminaire includes a laser light source configured to be driven by electrical power to emit laser light rays, a phosphor plate, and a solid medium freeform prism or waveguide. The solid medium freeform prism or waveguide confines incoming laser light ray emitted from the laser light source inside the solid medium until conversion into illumination lighting by the phosphor plate. The solid medium includes an input surface or lens coupled to the laser light source, an output surface, and a highly reflective internal surface to reflect laser light rays to propagate inside the solid medium until emission through the output surface. The phosphor plate is coupled to the output surface of the solid medium to convert the reflected laser light rays into the illumination lighting to emit from the luminaire.

An electrowetting cell includes a substrate that includes a well filled with at least one fluid an external contact surface. The substrate is formed of ceramic or fiberglass mesh infused with resin. A control channel electrode connection pad and a common electrode connection pad are on the external contact surface. A first plate is coupled to the substrate to seal a first end of the well. A second plate is coupled to the substrate to seal a second end of the well. The electrowetting cell further includes a control channel electrode on the substrate configured to control a shape of the at least one fluid via an electric field, a common electrode, a control channel electrode interconnect connected to the control channel electrode and the control channel electrode connection pad, and a common electrode interconnect connected to the common electrode and the common electrode connection pad.

An example lighting device includes a plurality of individually controllable illumination light sources configured to be driven by electrical power to emit light. The lighting device further includes an optical lens positioned over the illumination light sources for beam shaping or steering. The optical lens has a plurality of aspherical, spherical, planar, or freeform surfaces, including an input surface coupled to receive light from the illumination light sources and an output surface. The input surface includes an input peripheral portion and an input central portion. The input peripheral portion extends from the illumination light sources and includes a plurality of input peripheral segments that are discontinuous and in aggregate curve from a first region of the input surface near the illumination light sources to a second region of the input surface near the input central portion.

For a luminaire offering both illumination and display functionality, control strategies coordinate illumination/image output so as to mitigate interference of the illumination light output with aspects of the displayed image light output. In one example, when displaying a selected image with one or more white regions in the image, a sufficient number of selected white illumination emitters can be ON or operating in a low power state in the white regions while the rest of the luminaire output area can display the non-white elements of the image with aligned illumination emitters turned OFF. In another example, an image is displayed in a selected region of the luminaire output while illumination emitters within the area displaying the image are OFF or operating in a low power state, but illumination emitters along other parts of the luminaire output are turned ON.

A configurable optical device may include an optical transducer, a multi-lens arrangement, and a controllable optical modulator. The optical transducer is configured to convert light to electrical signals or to convert electrical signals to light. The multi-lens arrangement is positioned to redirect at least some of the light to or from the optical transducer. The controllable optical modulator is provided between the multi-lens arrangement and the optical transducer. The controllable optical modulator is coupled to receive and spatially modulate light to or from the optical transducer. The optical modulator is selectively controllable to steer and/or shape the light to a selected distribution of light from the multi-lens arrangement onto the optical transducer and/or from the optical transducer onto the multi-lens arrangement.

The examples relate to implementations of an apparatus and a luminaire that use isolated display and lighting portions and optical passages for backlit general illumination through the display. The apparatus includes a general illumination light source, an optical coupling, and an optical array. A luminaire includes the apparatus and a display light board. The display light board may include display light emitters and transparent regions. The transparent regions enable general illumination light to pass through the display light board. The general illumination light source outputs general illumination light that is directed by the optical coupling toward the optical array. The optical array has optical passages and optical array supports. The optical array supports frame the display light emitters and the optical passages channel the directed general illumination light from the optical coupling around display light emitters framed near the optical array supports. Near-field shadow regions are formed under the display light emitters.

The examples relate to various implementations of a software configurable luminaire and a transparent display device for use in such a luminaire. The luminaire is able to generate light sufficient to provide general illumination of a space in which the luminaire is installed and provide an image display. The general illumination is provided by additional light sources and/or improved display components of the transparent display device.

The examples relate to various implementations of a software configurable lighting device, installed as a panel, that offers the capability to appear like and emulate a variety of different lighting devices. Emulation includes the appearance of the lighting device as installed in the wall or ceiling, possibly, both when lighting and when not lighting, as well as light output distribution, e.g. direction and/or beam shape.

In a liquid crystal type variable beam shaping optic, a part of a structure that forms a gap for the liquid crystals includes a surface relief micro-structure diffuser. Due to the micro-features of the diffuser, the gap is non-uniform. A voltage applied to an electrode associated with the diffuser and an electrode associated with an opposing substrate controls the orientation of uniaxial nematic liquid crystals in a material filling the non-uniform gap. For example, the index of refraction of the material may vary relative to an index of refraction of the diffuser, based on variations of the crystal orientation caused by variation of the applied voltage. The change in relative indices of refraction, in the examples, changes a focal length of the variable optic and thus the shape of a light beam optically processed through the liquid crystal optic.
