A bypass line is described that is capable of equalizing pressure within an HVAC system. The bypass line can also cause less noise than other solutions. A bypass line under the present disclosure can comprise a line from a high pressure side to a low pressure side of an HVAC system. Valves and orifices can be disposed within the bypass line. The valves and orifices help to slow the speed of fluid from high pressure to low pressure locations, thus reducing noise during pressure equalization.

The present invention addresses the need for a collapsible filter that is easily assembled and installed. The collapsible filter comprises top and bottom arms rotatably attached to the top and bottom edges of two end caps. A pleated filter media is provided attached to at least one of the end caps. The present invention also addresses the need for mechanisms to facilitation the expansion of the pleated filter media, utilizing spring-like devices or other materials that may be compressed but expand to a natural state. Similarly, the present invention further addresses the need for mechanisms that allow for controlling the distance between adjacent pleats within a pleated, collapsible filter media. The present invention recognizes that a combination of these approaches may be utilized to provide a collapsible filter that is easily constructed at a manufacturing facility, assembled in the field, and installed within a system having need for a filter.

A heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system, comprising a heat exchanger plenum having a surface located therein that is susceptible to degradation upon exposure to light, and a light bulb located within the plenum. In one embodiment, the light bulb has a side directed toward the surface and a light-absorptive barrier coupled to the side. The light-absorptive barrier is configured to reduce direct light transmission from the light bulb to the surface to thereby inhibit degradation of the surface. The invention further provides an HVAC system comprising a light bulb configured to emit photonic energy, and an absorptive barrier coupled to at least a portion of an outside of the bulb. The absorptive barrier is configured to substantially reduce transmission of the emitted photonic energy beyond the portion of the bulb.
