A method is provided for carrying out channel performance monitoring in an optical communication system. The method comprising: receiving an optical signal; obtaining digitized samples associated with the optical signal; storing the digitized samples; carrying out an off-line processing of the stored samples. The off-line processing includes: using the digitized samples to determine information characterizing the at least one optical channel used for conveying the optical signal; using the determined information to estimate a value of at least one optical channel performance parameter characterizing the at least one optical channel; and forwarding the value of the at least one optical channel performance parameter to a network management element; and wherein the at least one optical channel performance parameter is estimated without a prior knowledge of information on a modulation format associated with the optical channel.

Channel performance monitoring and an optical communication system using same

A technique for power feeding of a common element of an access network from subscribers of the access network connected to the common element through subscriber lines being electric wires or optical fibers, the method comprises providing the subscribers with respective local power sources, and powering the common element from the one or more local power sources by selectively and/or dynamically combining power conducted there-from through the subscriber lines, thereby allowing at least partial operation of the common element.

Technique for blocking of optical channels

A method for allocating faults in a passive optical network (PON) by placing a number of passive unique optical correlators in a number of respective diagnostic points of the PON, each of the passive unique optical correlators being responsive to an optical diagnostic signal by returning a predetermined unique matching signal; by further transmitting the diagnostic optical signal in the PON towards the diagnostic points to receive upstream response signals from the correlators. Upon detecting presence or absence, in the received response signals, of a predetermined unique matching signal expected from a specific optical correlator, judging about a fault in proximity of the respective specific diagnostic point.
