Disclosed herein is a compositions-of-matter comprising a cross-linked polymer, the cross-linked polymer comprising a plurality of resilin polypeptide moieties, and at least one polymeric moiety covalently cross-linked to a plurality of the resilin polypeptide moieties via at least one cross-linking moiety, the cross-linking moiety being devoid of a biphenyl moiety. Further disclosed herein is a process for preparing the composition-of-matter, a composite material comprising the composition-of-matter and at least one additional polymeric substance bound to the cross-linked polymer, an article-of-manufacturing comprising the composition-of-matter and/or composite material, and a method of treating tissue damage or loss by implanting said article-of-manufacturing in a subject.

Provided herein are polymers having the general formula I as defined herein,A-L-B&#x2003;&#x2003;Formula Ias well as crosslinked polymers having the general formula III:B'-L&#x2032;-A&#x2032;-A&#x2033;-L&#x2033;-B&#x2033;&#x2003;&#x2003;Formula IIIand methods of preparing the polymers, wherein A is a dihydroxyphenyl moiety; A&#x2032;-A&#x2033; is a pair of crosslinked dihydroxyphenyl moieties; B, B&#x2032; and B&#x2033; are each a biopolymer; and L, L&#x2032; and L&#x2033; are each a linking moiety. Further provided are crosslinked adhesives prepared from the polymers, methods of generating same by oxidizing a polymer, and uses thereof. A process is disclosed for recovering pure cellulose from a cellulose-containing sludge, the process comprising treating a sludge cellulose source under conditions permitting dissolution of non-cellulose material and suspension of the cellulose, wherein said dissolution conditions do not alter cellulose morphology.
