Methods and systems for balancing resources in a virtual machine computing environment are disclosed. A server can receive data illustrating the configuration of host machines and virtual machines in client computing environment. A simulated computing environment can be created that mirrors the configuration of the client computing environment. Data relating to resource usage (e.g., processor, memory, and storage) of the host machines can be received. The resource usage can be simulated in the simulated computing environment to mirror the usage of the client computing environment. A recommendation to execute a migration of a virtual machine can be received from the simulated computing environment. Instructions to execute a migration corresponding to the recommended migration can be generated and sent to the client computing environment.

Techniques for automatic firewall configuration in a virtual network environment are described. In one example embodiment, firewall rules are configured using virtual machine (VM) inventory objects. The firewall rules are then transformed by replacing the VM inventory objects in the configured firewall rules with associated Internet protocol (IP) addresses using an IP address management table (IPAM) table and a network address translation (NAT) table. The transformed firewall rules are then sent to a firewall engine for filtering communication from and to VMs running on a first machine on one or more computing networks and communication from and to VMs running on a second machine on one or more computing networks at a firewall according to the transformed firewall rules.

A method of upgrading nodes of a network virtualization platform is provided. The method receives a definition of an upgrade plan to upgrade a group of upgrade units. Each upgrade unit includes a set of nodes of the network virtualization platform. The plan groups sets of upgrade units into one or more upgrade groups and specifies a set of parameters for upgrading each upgrade unit. The method sends upgrade instructions to each upgrade unit to trigger upgrade for the upgrade unit. The method receives upgrade status from the upgrade units. The method aggregates and displays the status for the upgrade units of each upgrade group. When upgrade is in paused state, the method allows modifications to the upgrade plan. The method re-computes the upgrade plan before starting or resuming the upgrade. The upgrade plan is persisted by storing a portion of the upgrade plan needed to re-compute the upgrade plan.

A system for a reservation for a multi-machine application can include a server virtualization engine configured to create a mixed reservation of information technology resources from a cluster of hosts including a virtual machine host and a container host. The system can include a cloud management engine configured to create a multi-machine blueprint from the mixed reservation including a virtual machine template, a container image, and a definition of networking. The cloud management engine can be configured to deploy the multi-machine blueprint to provide a multi-machine application.

The transformed load balancing rules are then sent to the load balancer for load balancing network traffic between a plurality of VMs running on one or more host computing systems in one or more computing networks.

Techniques for dynamic configuration of a domain name system (DNS) server in a virtual network environment are described. In one example embodiment, DNS rules are configured using virtual machine (VM) inventory objects and associated DNS names. Further, the configured DNS rules are transformed by replacing the VM inventory objects in the configured DNS rules with associated Internet protocol (IP) addresses using an IP address management (IPAM) table or a network address translation (NAT) table and the DNS names in the configured DNS rules with modified DNS names using a zone table and a view table. Furthermore, the transformed DNS rules are sent to the DNS server for performing domain name resolutions associated with multiple VMs running on a plurality of host computing systems in a computing network.
