An apparatus for and method of encapsulating Ethernet frames over a Very high speed Digital Subscriber Line (VDSL) transport facility. The VDSL frames are transmitted over a point to point VDSL link where they are subsequently extracted and forwarded as standard Ethernet frames. The VDSL facility transport system comprises an Ethernet to VDSL Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) coupled to a DSL Access Multiplexor (DSLAM) over a VDSL transport facility. The Ethernet to VDSL CPE functions to receive a 10BaseT Ethernet signal and encapsulate the Ethernet frame into a VDSL frame for transmission over the VDSL facility. The DSLAM is adapted to receive VDSL frames, extract Ethernet frames therefrom and generate and output a standard Ethernet signal. Ethernet frames are encapsulated within VDSL frames and transmitted on the wire pair without regard to the state of the SOC signals.

A digital subscriber line access multiplexer (DSLAM) adapted for use with an Ethernet over Very High Speed Digital Subscriber Line (VDSL) transport facility. The DSLAM connects to a plurality of CPE devices on one end and to a high speed Ethernet link on the other. The DSLAM is adapted to receive HDLC protocol formatted VDSL frames, extract Ethernet frames therefrom and generate standard Ethernet signals for transmission overran Ethernet connection. Standard Ethernet frames are received from a Fast Ethernet input signal and encapsulated in HDLC frames for transmission over the VDSL facility to a particular CPE. The voice signal from a conventional telephone set is combined with the VDSL data signal. The combined signal is split at the DLSAM into separate voice and data signals. The Ethernet frame data is extracted from the HDLC frames and input to the Ethernet switch. The voice signal is forwarded to a conventional PBX.

The VDSL frames are transmitted over a point to point VDSL link where they are subsequently extracted and forwarded as standard Ethernet frames. The VDSL facility transport system comprises an Ethernet to VDSL Consumer Premises Equipment (CPE) coupled to a DSL Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) over a VDSL transport facility. The Ethernet to VDSL CPE functions to receive a 10BaseT Ethernet signal and encapsulate the Ethernet frame into a VDSL frame for transmission over the VDSL facility. The DSLAM is adapted to receive VDSL frames, extract Ethernet frames therefrom and output a standard Ethernet signal. Ethernet frames are encapsulated within VDSL frames and transmitted on the wire pair without regard to the state of the SOC signals thus overcoming the problems associated with syncing the transmission of the Ethernet data with the SOC signals. The present invention also provides a method of providing the receiving station an indication of the start of a VDSL frame. A preamble having certain desirable characteristics is used by the receiving station to identify the start of a VDSL frame. To further ensure that a detected start of frame is valid, the length field of the VDSL frame is examined for a legal length value.

An apparatus for and method of encapsulating Ethernet frame data in HDLC frames for transmission over a VDSL transport facility. The HDLC frames are transmitted over a point to point VDSL link where they are subsequently extracted and forwarded as standard Ethernet frames. The VDSL facility transport system comprises one or more Ethernet to VDSL CPEs coupled to a DSLAM over a VDSL transport facility. The Ethernet to VDSL CPE functions to receive a 10BaseT Ethernet signal and encapsulate the Ethernet frame into a HDLC frame for transmission over the VDSL facility. In one embodiment, a single chip microcontroller on the CPE performs both Ethernet controller and HDLC controller functions. The DSLAM is adapted to receive HDLC frames from one or more CPEs, extract Ethernet frames therefrom and generate and output a standard Ethernet signal. Ethernet frames are encapsulated within HDLC frames and transmitted on the wire pair without regard to the state of the SOC signals. This overcomes the problems associated with synchronizing the transmission of the Ethernet data with the SOC signals.

Ethernet frame encapsulation over VDSL using HDLC

A translation table apparatus used to perform both forward and backward bitmap vector translations. The translation table is used with bit vectors where it is desired to displace one or more bits to different bit positions in accordance with a configurable bitmap translation table. The translation of one bit vector to another is performed in real time and any number of bits can be moved simultaneously. In addition, both the bit vectors and the contents of the translation table can be changed on the fly. Translations are performed on multiple bits simultaneously wherein several bits can be displaced at the same time in accordance with the translation table. The same hardware used to implement the translation table is used for backward translations as well.

Port redundancy and backpressure translation table apparatus

A configurable weighted round robin arbitration mechanism adapted to receive as input a vector of order N, wherein each bit in the vector represents the eligibility of a queue or other source of data to participate in the arbitration process. A bit set to `1` in the vector indicates that the corresponding queue is eligible to participate in the arbitration process. Conversely, a bit set to `0` in the vector indicates that the corresponding queue is not eligible to participate. The arbitration process of the present invention enables a user to assign each queue (which corresponds to one of the bits in the vector) an individual weight. This results in a modified vector that represents the incoming vector after being handled by the weighting process. By giving each bit in the vector a weight, the user can control the probability of each bit, i.e., queue, being selected in the arbitration process.
