Monitoring circuitry connectable to power conversion circuitry enclosed within packaging, the power conversion circuitry including terminals providing external connections to nodes of the power conversion circuitry enclosed within the packaging, the monitoring circuitry including: a comparator including a first input terminals connectable to first and second terminals of the power conversion circuitry and a second input terminal connected to a reference voltage, wherein the first and second terminals provide external connections to first and second nodes connected along respective current paths each connected to switching circuitry of the power conversion circuitry enclosed within the packaging, wherein the comparator detects a switch state of the switching circuitry based on a voltage generated at the first input terminal and the reference voltage; processing circuitry connected to the comparator and configured to monitor the power conversion circuitry based on the detected switch state and a signal of the power conversion circuitry.

Circuitry and methods for monitoring power conversion circuitry

In some examples, an electrical power system includes a solid state power converter including a first set of switches on a source side of the solid state power converter and a second set of switches on a load side of the solid state power converter. The electrical power system also includes a power source connected to the source side of the solid state power converter and also includes a differential bus connected to the load side of the solid state power converter. The electrical power system further includes a controller configured to receive a first signal indicating a current at the source side and receive a second signal indicating a current at the load side. The controller is further configured to detect, based on a time derivative of the first signal and a time derivative of the second signal, a fault in the electrical power system.

Fault detection for a solid state power converter

In some examples, this disclosure describes a method for detecting a fault in an electrical power system comprising a bus connected between a first solid state power converter and a second solid state power converter. The method includes receiving, at a controller of the electrical power system, a first signal indicating a current at a source side of the first solid state power converter, wherein the source side of the first solid state power converter is connected to a power source of the electrical power system. The method also includes receiving, at the controller, a second signal indicating a current at the bus and determining, by the controller, that a fault occurred in the electrical power system based on the first signal and further based on the second signal. The method further includes controlling the first solid state power converter in response to determining that the fault occurred.

A two-start helical heat exchanger comprises a helical baffle extending along a length of the heat exchanger and having first and second surfaces, wherein: the first surface of the baffle is arranged to provide a first helical fluid flow path for a first fluid; and the second surface of the baffle is arranged to provide a second helical fluid flow path for a second fluid, wherein the second fluid flow path is arranged in counter-flow with the first fluid flow path and a casing within which the baffle is mounted. The baffle is arranged such that first and second fluid flow paths are in thermal contact with each other through the baffle, and in thermal contact with the casing. The heat exchanger may be incorporated into a power converter, for example to cool the power converter. The heat exchanger may be used on an aircraft.

Heat exchanger

A bi-directional direct current (DC) solid state power controller (SSPC) architecture and control method. The SSPC protects a DC distribution system by isolating both the positive and negative buses independently in case of short circuit or ground fault. The SSPC architecture includes two self-heal interleaved capacitors and includes a fast, soft-charging control technique that provides line-isolated charging of the DC bulk capacitor to avoid inrush current when powering up the DC distribution system. The soft-charging function alternately charges one of the two interleaved capacitors, while the other capacitor discharges to the DC bulk capacitor. Repetitive switching results in a charging and discharging process that increases the voltage of the DC bulk capacitor prior to powering up the DC distribution system, while keeping the DC power source isolated from the load.

A system, method and machine-readable instructions for monitoring a power electronics device. The system involves a semiconductor device, at least one sensor and a processor. The processor is configured to monitor a junction temperature of the semiconductor device by determining from the at least one sensor an on-state resistance of the semiconductor device and calculating the junction temperature of the semiconductor device according to a relationship between the on-state resistance of the semiconductor device and the junction temperature of the semiconductor device. The processor may apply an ageing coefficient to the on-state resistance.

Health monitoring and failure prognosis of power electronics devices

A method determines a generator system load and/or rotor angle. The generator system has a generator with a generator terminal outputting electrical power generated by the generator, a transformer and a point of common coupling, PCC, terminal. The transformer is between the generator and PCC terminals. The method includes: determining the generator field current; determining the output voltage, the output current and the power factor and/or angle of the output voltage and output current from the generator terminal, and determining the load angle of the generator system, output voltage from the generator terminal, output current from the generator terminal and the power factor and/or angle; and/or determining the output voltage, the output current and the power factor and/or angle of the output voltage and output current, and determining the rotor angle of the generator system, output voltage, output current from the PCC terminal and the power factor and/or angle.

A power system, including: a synchronous electrical generator having a rotor; and an angle computation unit configured to: determine a rotor angle in a steady state period of the synchronous electrical generator, determine a change in rotor angle in a transient period of the synchronous electrical generator, and estimate the rotor angle in the transient period based on the steady state rotor angle and the change in rotor angle.

Power system

A power system includes a synchronous electrical generator having a rotor driven by a shaft; a permanent magnet signaling generator, coupled to the shaft; and an angle computation unit configured to calculate a rotor angle or load angle based on a voltage from the permanent magnet signaling generator and a voltage from the synchronous electrical generator.

A method of classifying a stator winding fault in a brushless synchronous generator includes measuring an electrical parameter of the stator winding and classifying the fault by calculating positive or negative sequence harmonics of the parameter and comparing one or more harmonic component to a threshold.

In some examples, an electrical power system includes a differential bus including a high-side rail and a low-side rail, a power source configured to generate power, and a bulk capacitor coupled between the high-side rail and the low-side rail, the bulk capacitor configured to filter the power generated by the power source. The electrical power system also includes a converter configured to convert the power filtered by the bulk capacitor and a pre-charging circuit comprising one or more switches and a middle capacitor, the pre-charging circuit configured to pre-charge the bulk capacitor.

A method of monitoring the health of a semiconductor power electronic switch such as an insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) is provided. The method having the steps of: measuring one or more parameters selected from the group consisting of: a rate of change of voltage across the switch; a rate of change of current through the switch, a charge present on a gate of the switch (Q), a peak overshoot voltage (V) across the switch, and a peak overshoot or reverse recovery current (I) through the switch; and estimating the health of the switch based on the measured parameter(s).

A method for controlling a wind power plant, the wind power plant including a plant controller for controlling a plurality of wind turbine generators. The method for controlling a wind power plant allows the wind power plant to continue operating through a grid fault in a weak grid environment. In the method, a fault recovery process is carried out with a wind turbine power controller during a wind turbine fault recovery state to determine a grid voltage (VWTG), compare the grid voltage to a predetermined reference voltage (Vref) to obtain a difference value, and determine a current reference (QrefVC) based on the difference value for generating a reactive current (Idref) for regulating the grid voltage to the predetermined reference grid voltage. A corresponding wind power plant is further provided.

Method for controlling a wind power plant and a wind power plant

A method of assessing a condition of a multi-phase power system comprises the steps of: acquiring a voltage signal and a current signal for each phase of the multi-phase power system; calculating a product of the voltage signal for each phase of the multi-phase power system with one of the current signals such that the product is between a voltage signal for one phase and a current signal for a different phase for at least two of the products; summing the calculated products; and identifying the possible existence of a fault in the multi-phase power system based on a frequency analysis of the summed calculated products.
