Access to documents by parties can be controlled as follows. First, access can be controlled in accordance with access counters associated with the parties, where the documents have one or more versions. Second, access can be controlled in accordance with access levels associated with the parties. The access level of each party is one of a first access level, a second access level, a third access level, or a fourth access level. The first, second, third, and fourth access levels are ordered from the first access level to the fourth access level such that the first access level provides a greatest degree of access to the documents and the fourth access level provides a least degree of access to the documents. Third, access can be controlled in accordance with placement of organizations within a hierarchy of organizations, where the parties are organized over the organizations.

Controlling access to documents by parties

Implementations of the disclosure describe reconfiguring virtual machines. In one implementation, a method includes identifying, in view of virtual machine configuration data of a virtual machine, a plurality of virtual hardware components supported by a guest operating system on the virtual machine, identifying, by a processing device executing the virtual machine from the plurality of virtual hardware components, a set of supported virtual hardware components that are not used by the virtual machine, and reconfiguring, by the processing device, the virtual machine to use at least one virtual hardware component from the set of supported virtual hardware components.

Reconfiguring virtual machines

A virtual machine manager (VMM) provides an emulated printer to a guest operating system. The virtual machine manager is configured to receive a printer mechanism type, receive an output type, and configure the emulated printer according to the printer type, printer mechanism type, and output type. The VMM, in one embodiment, also provides a virtual communication channel over which a guest operating system may identify and communicate with the emulated printer. The guest operating system installs a printer driver corresponding to the emulated printer, prints an object to the emulated printer via the virtual communication bus, and the VMM creates a print image of the object before communicating the print image with a target destination.

Hypervisor printer emulation for virtual machines

Illustrative embodiments disclose a computer process controlling access to one or more documents by one or more parties, the parties organized over one or more organizations. In response to a party associated with a first organization attempting to access documents, determining an access level associated with the party as a first access level, a second access level, a third access level, or a fourth access level. The first, second, third and fourth access levels are ordered from the first access level to the fourth access level such that the first access level provides a greatest degree of access to the documents and the fourth access level provides a least degree of access to the documents. In response to determining the access level associated with the party, permitting the party to access the documents, or preventing the party from accessing the documents, according to the access level associated with the party.

An installer installing an operating system on a host computer system detects that the operating system is to be run under a hypervisor, and causes at least one configuration parameter of the operating system to be adjusted based on the hypervisor. A migration tool migrating a virtual machine from one hypervisor to another hypervisor, identifies the types of the two hypervisors, the operating system used by the virtual machine, and causes at least one configuration parameter of the operating system to be adjusted based on the target hypervisor.

Modifying an OS installer to allow for hypervisor-specific adjustment of an OS

Implementations for providing random data to a guest operating system are disclosed. In one implementation, a method of the disclosure comprises: receiving, by a processing device of a host computer system, a first random data item from an external computer system; updating an entropy pool using the first random data item; and providing a virtual machine running on the host computer system with a second random data derived from the host entropy pool.

Providing random data to a guest operating system

A hypervisor running on a host computer system receives data that was requested to be copied on a client device using one of a plurality of copy operations supported by the client device. The hypervisor transfers the data and an identifier of a copy operation used on the client device to a virtual machine hosted by the host computer system to allow a user to paste the data in the virtual machine via a paste operation that corresponds to the copy operation used on the client device.

Providing seamless copy-paste operations in a virtual machine environment

A host controller obtains virtual machine configuration data for a virtual machine which has a guest operating system. The host controller may identify a plurality of virtual hardware components supported by the guest operating system and may identify a set of the plurality of virtual hardware components which are not used by the virtual machine. The host controller may reconfigure the virtual machine to use one or more of the set of virtual hardware components.

Adjustment during migration to a different virtualization environment

A client version control system (VCS) accesses a remote VCS to retrieve the difference between current metadata stored locally representing a first version of the software packages currently installed and newer metadata representing a second version of the software packages available from a server for distribution, without having to download the entire newer metadata. The client VCS generates the newer metadata based on the current metadata and the difference of the current and newer metadata retrieved from the remote VCS. A package manager coupled to the client VCS to download the second version of the software package from the server based on the newer metadata then installs or updates newer releases of software packages as available from the distribution server.

Managing software packages using a version control system

A network manager establishes a network connection with a local area network (LAN) using a gateway device that interfaces the LAN with the Internet. A request is transmitted to the gateway device via the network connection to access a Web server of the Internet. A response page received from the Internet via the gateway device is examined to determine whether the response page is a redirect page, or if the response page is from a domain different from that was requested, from a Web proxy server that requires a user to log in, in order to access the Web server. It is determined whether credentials associated with the user required for the login page have been previously cached locally. The cached credentials of the user is automatically provided in response to the redirect page without user intervention to log into the Web proxy server, if it is determined that the credentials have been previously cached locally.

Accessing external network via proxy server

A host controller system monitors virtual machine hosts for a tuning event. Upon detecting a tuning event, the host controller system identifies at least one virtual machine potentially affected by the tuning event, and determines whether a corresponding guest operating system should be tuned (e.g., whether configuration parameters should be adjusted). If so, the host controller system obtains configuration data for the corresponding guest operating system and provides the configuration data to the corresponding guest operating system.

Configuring parameters of a guest operating system based on detected events

A method and system for performing tests in a virtualized computing environment. A test suite includes test code for testing emulation of a device associated with a guest hosted by a computer system. The computer system sets an input parameter of a migration command in the test code to a first value to turn off the migration command. The computer system executes the test code to produce a first result. The computer system also sets the input parameter of the migration command to a second value to turn on the migration command, and executes the test code to produce a second result. Turning on the migration command causes the guest to migrate to a second hypervisor. Based on the first result and the second result, the computer system determines whether an error occurs in migration of the guest or in the emulation of the device.

Test suites for virtualized computing environments

A mechanism for communication in a virtualization system via multiple generic channels of a paravirtualized device is disclosed. A method of the invention includes creating one or more communication devices for each VM managed by a hypervisor of a host machine, exposing a plurality of ports on top of each created communication device to the VM that the communication device is associated with, specifying options for each port to enable the port to be used to establish a communication channel between the hypervisor and the VM, the options including a port name to associate with both of the port and the communication channel of the port, and creating a direct connection between two or more VMs via their associated communication devices in order to enable direct communication between the two or more VMs by utilizing the ports of their associated communication devices.
