Methods, apparatus and computer software products implement embodiments of the present invention that include applying energy to a probe that is in contact with tissue in a body cavity so as to ablate the tissue. While applying the energy, signals are received from a location transducer in the probe, which are indicative of a location of the probe in the cavity. The signals are processed so as to derive 3D location coordinate points corresponding to the location of the probe at a sequence of times during which the energy was applied. While applying the energy, a 3D representation of the body cavity is rendered to a display, and visual indicators are superimposed on the 3D representation, the visual indicators corresponding to the 3D location coordinate points at the sequence of times. Finally, a linear trace connecting the coordinate points in accordance with the sequence is superimposed on the 3D representation.

A method includes receiving two or more surface representations of at least a portion of an organ of a patient. The two or more received surface representations are registered one with the other. One of the surface representations is selected as a base map. A draggable geodesic region is generated for at least one of the two or more surface representations not selected as a base map, wherein the geodesic region is configured to follow varying anatomy as the region is dragged over the base map. The draggable geodesic region is overlaid on the base map to generate a mixed multilayer representation, and the mixed multilayer representation is presented to a user.

A method for improving visualization of at least a catheter in an organ of a patient, the method includes displaying a map of the organ, and at least a first visual marker overlaid on the map. A position, falling within the map, of a distal end of the catheter is received. Displayed on the map are (i) the distal end of the catheter in accordance with the received position, and (ii) instead of the first visual marker, at least a second visual marker, which increases visibility of at least one of the map and the distal end, relative to the first visual marker.
